Conflict Resolution Case Study

By Teagan Ellis

The Conflict at the Northern Beaches Hospital

what is the main problem?

The Main Problem

The main problem tells us that doctors are threatening to with hold treatment at the northern beaches hospital.

When did this problem first occur?

When it first happened

This problem was first known when the northern beaches hospital was first opened in late November last year.

What was the cause of the problem?

What is the cause?

The cause of this problem was the limited resources towards the individuals and groups because they had completely underestimated the number of patients that required the needs they needed which lead the hospital under resourced.

where was this happening?

Where did this happen?

This was happening when doctors had realized that they kept on running out of treatment for the private patients, which had brought them to their concerns about it.

The main cause of this conflict

First cause = LIMITED RESOURCES

Limited Resources

The first main cause for this conflict was limited resources, this is because;

  • Healthscope has underestimated the number of people that had required medical assistance - especially in the emergency department "2,700 patients in the first 16 days when the hospital first opened".
  • Lack of equipment for the patients
  • Lack of staffing organization showing that doctors have been working for 110 hours per week.
  • Poor supervision on the junior doctors

The impact of this conflict towards well being

Wellbeing of Professional Medical Staff

The Medical Staff

The impact of the wellbeing medical staff is that the staff has limited people working in the hours that they should be working in, also was told that one intern was responsible for up to 60 patients and that they was no one in the medical register in the emergency department which lead to unsafe supervision.

The Wellbeing of the patients

The Patients

The impact of wellbeing towards the patients indicates a lot of concern towards the unsupervised hospital and that someone was responsible for up to 60 patients which was not responsible as the professional doctors should of been responsible for most of them.

Overall relationship between both groups

The relationship on both

Their is a clear relationship on the lack of resources with the wellbeing of staff members at the hospital, including nurses and doctors and it impacts on the patients that are visiting the hospital not recieving the right resources for their treatments.

How was it resolved?

How was this resolved?

Resolution one

ASMOF (Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation) wrote a letter to the NSW department of health outlining their concerns about the hospital.

How was this resolved?

Resolution two

Brad Hazzard of NSW health has spoken with Healthscope and told them to get onto the problem and fix it straight away so it wouldn't cause more conflict.

How was this resolved?

Resolution three

Healthscope had began to fix this problem with the staff shortages by employing more temporary staff to fill the missing gaps to fit in with the hours.

How was this resolved?

Resolution four

Nurses at the hospital also resolved the issue of lack of resources by driving to Manly and Monavale hospital by filling up their car with medical supplies to prevent the lack of resources at the Northern Beaches Hospital.
