John Kelly was baptized on 20th February 1820, in Spyglass Church in the county of Tipperary, Ireland. His parents, Thomas Kelly and Mary Cody, lived near the town of Clonbrogan, which is about one mile west from Spyglass, and raised a family of five boys and two girls on less than half an acre. While six of the children would make the journey to Australia, it was the eldest son John who made the first crossing thanks to sentence of seven years transportation. Kelly had worked as a ranger on Lord Ormonde's Blarney estate until transported for stealing two pigs.

John Red Kelly is a dad to 12 and his sun is Ned Kelly the famous bush ranger. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia for stealing to pigs. He married 18 year old Allen Quinn and in February 1851 they had there first child named Mary Jane.

Red was baptized on 20th February 1820 in Spyglass church in the Parish of Millenarian in the country of Tipperary Ireland. Mary Cody and Thomas Kelly mum and dad of Red lived in the downland of Abrogation which is about 1 mile west of Spyglass village.

In 1864 John Kelly sold his farm for £80 and headed further inland with his family, and they rented 40 acres near Leaven, Victoria. It is this entry, signed by John Kelly himself that confirms that he and the John Kelly baptized on 20th February 1820 in Moyglass are one and the same person.
