Education Theorists: Pestalozzi

Jolee, Chandler, Sydney

Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi was Swiss educational reformer, theorist, and author

About Pestalozzi

Known as the Father of Pedagogy (method/practice of teaching)

He worked as a clergyman, farmer and politician

Felt the need to reform education after seeing children in factories

The Pestalozzi Method

Neuhof: a school Pestalozzi created to teach the production of goods, failed but led to the Pestalozzi Method

Advocated that education should follow the course of nature. Pestalozzi reared his only son, Jean -Jacques, using Emile, a book written by Rousseau, as a guide and on harmonizing nature and educational practices

Pestalozzi Method: Advocated that education should follow the course of nature. Believed all education is based on sensory impressions. Must develop in the Head, Heart and Hands

"Education should develop powers of the Head, Heart and Hands"

Believed that all education is based on sensory impressions and that through the proper sensory experiences, children can achieve their natural potential

Group activities such as field trips, drawing, writing, physical activity help educate

Pestalozzi believed the best teachers were those who teach children, not subjects.

Wrote many books detailing his method, "How Father Pestalozzi Instructed His Three and a Half Year Old Son" and "Researches into the Course of Nature in the Development of the Human Race "

A further consequence of Pestalozzi's work was the movement to redirect instruction from the traditional instruction in which each child recited a previously assigned lesson to simultaneous group-centered instruction.
