Founders

When was my colony found?

Who found my colony?

The South Carolina colony was first inhabited by the Native Americans. By 1600 it was home to 1500-20,000 Native Americans. (Catawba, Cherokee, and Creek)

The first Europeans to visit South Carolina in 1321 were the Spanish explorers from Santo Domingo. In 1526 Lucas Vazquez de Allyon was believed to settle the first white European settlement in South Carolina. But it wasn't successful. Some french protectants under Jean Ribault tried to occupy the area but they also failed.

The Spanish returned and established Santa Elena near Parris Island. It was an important bane until 1587. In 1665 Edward Hyde and seven other members of the British nobility received an order from the king to establish the colony of Carolina. The first colony was settled at Albermarle Point in Charleston.
