Animals & Pollution

Air pollution

What's air pollution? To start off, air pollution is basically air but bad for us and earth. Air pollution can come from

anywhere vehicles, factories, and fossil fuels. Kinds of air pollution is, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur. It's harmful because these gases can cause acid rain and prevent plant growth. Air pollution can even hurt us, people with asthma or bronchitis will be affeted probably the most.

Water pollution

Water pollution is also important because water is one of the things that keep us alive. One way trash can get into the ocean is by people tossing trash near storm drains or when vehicle's exhaust flows into a storm drain. Leachate is a toxic sludge that is caused when rain water leaks into trash inside a landfill and when it meets with buried waste it creates leachate. How does leachate contribute to water pollution? Well, when leachate is made, it can seep into the ground polluting our groundwater.

This picture is showing oil flowing into a storm drain.

Land Pollution

Pollution affects land animals in many ways, but one main way is forest fires. Some forest fires happen in natural ways and some also start with pollution. How does pollution cause such huge fires? Well, to start off almost 85% of forest fires are started with pollution when camps are left unattended, people burn waste or remains, machine malfunctions, people carelessly throwing away cigarettes, and arson. People sometimes don’t even realize what they are doing when they litter in a bunch of animal’s habitats, and they should realize how much that little piece of trash is impacting animals. If you remember the amazon rainforest fire, well that was caused partly by human activity.

The start of it all

The start of factories started a bit after WWI; The Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution started in Britain in the 18th century, instead of having hand-made products you’d have products made from machines. The industrial revolution replaced agriculture; but agriculture still exists. The source of energy for the machines started with coal. When coal mines started to get deeper, the mines started to get a higher risk of floods, and people tried to find ways to pump the water out of the mines. Eventually they created a steam engine that could pump water out of very deep mines. Britain was able to get access to coal, which caused the demand for coal to be higher. The thought about machines even spread to America.

How does this affect animals?

If your having the same exact question as the title, this is for you! Air pollution hurts animals because, well to start off air pollution contains bad gases. The main bad gases are, sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide. These aren't even all of them, I'm just naming a few. These gases can even enter a rain cloud and create acid rain! So when humans, or animals breathe in these bad gases for a long period of time, they can actually develop breathing problems.

Basically, water and ocean pollution are easy to understand, but there are some that you might not have known about. Right now we're going to uncover some! About 100,000 marine animals die each year because they either eat, or get tangled in trash. All seven species of sea turtles are affected by trash. Also, they are 100% affected by trash. It's really sad, but you could help in different ways. First, you could donate to companies that specialize in helping marine life. Next, maybe you and some friends will go to the beach and pick up trash. Lastly, you could reduce the amount of plastic and maybe use more reusable items. There are multiple ways to help ocean pollution, but it is sad how most people just simply toss it carelessly.
