3 Forms of Prayer

Vocal Prayer

Vocal Prayer Using words to talk to God

Examples

Our Father, Hail Mary / Liturgy / Petition, intercessory /

Written / reading a psalm / repeating a phrase or "mantra".

Strength

Community / Easy to share / it connects us to a tradition, easy to memorize, benefits of peace and calming anxiety / helps keep God in mind.

Weaknesses

Could turn one directional (me to God) / it can become mechanistic and repetitive/ may lack interiority.

Meditation

Meditation Search (why, how) and Integration

Examples

See how a psalm connects with my life and calls out to me / Stop to see the meaning of each phrase in the Our Father / trying to understand and deepen a faith item (What does it mean to follow Jesus in my work? / Ignatian examen / Structured forms of prayer such as lectio divina, or Ignatian Meditation.

Strenghts

Integrating my life with scripture is a central part / greater depth and interiority / Listening.

Weaknesses

Not easy to teach/ Not easily made in a communal setting (Outside of doing it together or sharing the experience), could turn heady.

Difference between mindfulness, eastern meditation and

other Christian meditation.

Contemplation

Contemplation Being in the presence of God

Examples

Gaze upon and be gazed by God during Holy Hour / Feel God's embrace (in nature or in my room) / Contemplation without images / Ignatian Contemplation.

Strenghts

Greatest interiority or depth / Configured to Christ by being with him / from the heart.

Weaknesses

Difficult to teach it and put the experience into words / It requires the support of the other forms of prayer / It needs a particular time and space.
