Why is Sally Ride's Leadership so important?

Why is Sally Ride's Leadersh...

Sally Ride was a pioneer and a trailblazer. She embraced those who did. As one of the people investigating the Challenger explosion in 1968 (she was the only person to sit on panels investigating both the Challenger and the Columbia tragedy) , she was known for asking tough questions. Most of all, she inspired others to dream big and imagine themselves in roles they previously couldn't. One of the core challenges for leaders is to confidently see themselves in the role. Ride did that and more. Leaders consistently face changing requirments to achieve the goal. Sally easily adapted to the situation. By definition, pioneers are leaders -the first in their fields, leading the way for others to follow.

How Did Sally Ride Break Barriers?

In the 1960s, women were expected to either stay at home with the children or have a job in one of the few professions that the society deemed acceptable for women. This means that they lacked opportunities that were avaliable to men. Even though, science was not a viable career option for women in the sixties, Sally Ride did not let that stop her. She broke barriers with grace and professionalism-and literally changed the face of America's space program. She did not let the public's comments from preventing her to make a positive difference and pursuing her dream. She listened to her heart and gave a strong message to all girls and women.

Why is Sally Ride Considered a Fantastic Role Model?

The possibility of rejection didn't discourage her: she belived in herself enough to answer that infamous newspaper ad seeking individuals for the space program. Even though she is female and all kinds of different questions were asked, but she stayed positive and confident. She is well rounded: besides her Ph.D in atrophysics, she has an English degree. She followed her interests. A rising star in tennis, she chose a more cerebral route. She didn't let stereotypes define her: one of her first dreams was to become a professional football player. As the nation was beginning to get used to women, Ride reached new heights by bounding far above and beyond all others by becoming a high-profile astronaut. She is also credited for changing beliefs.

Thanks to her courage, determination, and her genius, the world changed. She carried with her the hopes and dreams of a generation of women who were trying to escape the bounds of tradition in their more earthly professions. In June 1983, she became the first American women-and, at age 32, the youngest American-in space. She later used her passion and energy to establish Sally Ride Science, a nationally-known science education endeavor dedicated to inspire young people to consider pursuing careers in science, technology, engineerng and math.

The Distinction

The Distinction

A celebrity is someone who is popular because she brought attention to herself, regardless of the reason. A hero is celebrated for the good she has done. And so, Sally Ride is a hero. She is a hero not because she was the first U.S women in space, but because she used her fame to make a positive differnce in our world. Many of today's women in technology were inspired by her example. For many young women,it is natural to watch a beautiful actress, model or gifted athlete and want to emulate them, but not Sally
