What is Grouping?

Introduction

Think about some ideas you have on grouping. What is it? Is it useful? Should all teachers use it? Etc.

Introduction

  • Grouping is a key part of planning and instructing.
  • It allows for collaboration within the classroom.
  • Grouping is used by general education teachers and special education teachers.
  • Grouping can happen in many different ways.

  • Learning Cycle Groups
  • Cooperative Groups
  • Group Investigation
  • Peer Tutoring
  • Teams & Games
  • Jig-Saw
  • Learning Together

Why is Grouping Used?

  • To assure that all students learn
  • To increase student engagement in learning
  • To teach students how to work with others
  • To facilitate social interaction among students
  • To motivate students
  • To improve students self-concepts and attitudes toward self and school
  • To teach students how to learn in a variety of ways
