The Tar-Pamlico River Basin is the third largest river basin in North Carolina. It is one of only four river basins entirely located within North Carolina. The Tar River begins in Person, Granville and Vance counties and flows in a southeasterly direction.
The Tar-Pamlico River terminates at Pamlico Sound. Major tributaries include Fishing Creek, Swift Creek, Cokey Swamp, Tranters Creek and the Pungo River and Piedmont near Roxboro.

The Tar-Pamlico river basins population is 472,629 (2010 U.S. Census).
Since the 1980s, nutrient-related pollution has created water quality problems in the Pamlico estuary. Excess amounts of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus have caused problems including low oxygen levels, extensive fish kills and harmful algal blooms.
