Plants Adaptations Menu

By: Wei Yee Pua

Adaptation 1

During autumn, some trees will have leaves that change color and fall. Why is this an adaptation and how does the process occur?

Answer

The reason why some trees will have leaves that change color and fall is because of the change in the length of daylight and temperature changes. The chlorophyll breaks down and they stop the food-making process. The green color disappears and the yellow to orange color starts to appear. This is an adaptation because, in the cooler seasons, the amount of daylight decreases dramatically, and plants are not easily able to produce as much food. Therefore, the chlorophyll breaks down, the leaves change color and fall off so they don’t waste the energy.

Definition

Phototropism

Response to light -

The plant will turn towards the direction the sunlight is coming from

Picture Example

Arctic Poppy

The Arctic Poppy is an example of a plant that responds to light because it will bend so that the sunlight is directly hitting the middle of the flower.

Plant Example

Definition

Gravitropism

Response to gravity -

No matter what way the seed is planted, it can sense the gravity and the roots will grow downwards, whilst the stem grows upward.

Picture Example

Strawberry Plants

Strawberry plants can reproduce by sending “runners” or long vines away from the plant. Once it is far away enough, it can grow into a new plant. Gravitropism will cause the roots to grow downwards even though the vine is not straight down.

Hydrotropism

Response to water -

The plant will grow in the direction where a water resource is found. Kind of like growing towards the light, they grow towards the water.

Picture Example

Popcorn Flower

The Popcorn Flower lives in a dry environment. It can sustain life there because its roots will find a water resource and grow towards it.

Thigmotropism

Response to touch/mechanical stimulation -

The plant will turn and bend its direction of growth in response to touch

Picture Example

Kudzu

The Kudzu is a plant that will start growing up and around another organism, like a tree, once it makes contact. It will eventually kill the organism.
