Objectives

Objectives

1) List at least 2 warning signs of human trafficking

2) Name a resource to use for reporting human trafficking

What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit. In some cases, traffickers trick, defraud or physically force victims into providing commercial sex. In others, victims are lied to, assaulted, threatened or manipulated into working under inhumane, illegal or otherwise unacceptable conditions.

It is a MULTI-BILLION dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 24.9 million people around the world.

Target Population

Traffickers tend to target vulnerable individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds, often living in unsafe circumstances, or searching for a better way of life. It has been reported that over 70% of the victims are young women and girls between the ages of 12-24, though young men and boys may be targeted as well. Sex trafficking victims include individuals of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, citizens, non-citizens, and income levels.

Relevance to Health

Relevance to Health

Health and wellness are a huge concern when it comes to human trafficking. Some of the health issues that affect human trafficking victims include sexually transmitted infections, physical injuries, substance abuse, malnutrition, and depression. Most, if not all the victims are not able to seek the help that they need to achieve good health or wellness. As a result, these victims end up dead or wait until the very last minute to receive minimal health if any.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

STDs

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are approximately 20 million new STD infections each year—almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24.
  • 8.0 percent of females aged 15 to 24 years who attended family planning clinics in the past 12 months tested positive for Chlamydia trachomatis infections in 2015

Injury and Violence Prevention

The social environment has a notable influence on the risk for injury and violence through:

  • Individual social experiences (for example, social norms, education, victimization history)
  • Social relationships (for example, parental monitoring and supervision of youth, peer group associations, family interactions)
  • Community environment (for example, cohesion in schools, neighborhoods, and communities)
  • Societal-level factors (for example, cultural beliefs, attitudes, incentives and disincentives, laws and regulations)

Health Topic Content

Facts

  • Human trafficking can vary among genders.
  • For females, especially adolescents, have high vulnerability to human trafficking in forms of sexual exploitation, arranged marriages, and forced labor.
  • Males have vulnerability to "various armed conflicts" and "sea slavery".

Facts

Risks

  • There should be true concern for this topic because of the challenges of gathering data, this leads to a decrease of awareness of how big of an issue this is in society.
  • The effects of lack of awareness can increase the number of young adolescent girls involved in this issue, therefore continuing the cycle.

Risks

Actions

  • Public health programs have the capacity of "improving and reduction health-care costs" and "provide vital statistics...in developing intervention strategies" (Leifer & Fleck, 2013).
  • Therefore, there needs to be more proactive approaches from public health programs to educate the public and research new ways to gather statistics on this issue.
  • Political Action Committees (PACs) give money to legislators who support their issues and raise awareness of legislation needed to bring solutions to their problems (Leifer & Fleck, 2013).
  • Therefore, it is also important for PACs to bring awareness to legislators of how important of a problem human trafficking in order for legislators to support and also receive monetary support for bringing their issue to light.

Recommendations

Recommendations

  • Have the National Human Trafficking Hotline saved as a contact
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Take precautionary measures with any monetary opportunities that require travel.
