Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit. In some cases, traffickers trick, defraud or physically force victims into providing commercial sex. In others, victims are lied to, assaulted, threatened or manipulated into working under inhumane, illegal or otherwise unacceptable conditions.
Traffickers tend to target vulnerable individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds, often living in unsafe circumstances, or searching for a better way of life. It has been reported that over 70% of the victims are young women and girls between the ages of 12-24, though young men and boys may be targeted as well. Sex trafficking victims include individuals of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, citizens, non-citizens, and income levels.
Health and wellness are a huge concern when it comes to human trafficking. Some of the health issues that affect human trafficking victims include sexually transmitted infections, physical injuries, substance abuse, malnutrition, and depression. Most, if not all the victims are not able to seek the help that they need to achieve good health or wellness. As a result, these victims end up dead or wait until the very last minute to receive minimal health if any.
