Migration also brought benefits to Ecuador.

The income of foreign currency through remittances has been an important contribution of the

Ecuadorians working abroad in the national economy.

FACTS

- Remittances were the second item in the balance of payments after oil,

representing 6% of GDP.

In 2006, 3 billion dollars in remittances were sent to the country.

The amount of foreign currency that was received by remittances was much greater than the social investment by the State :/

Furthermore, in this case, the middle and lower strata of the population directly benefited. This has been the most effective mechanism to combat poverty, since it not only improves the quality of life of migrant families, but also stimulates micro-businesses, commercial activities and services.

Two-thirds of Ecuadorian migrants are male.
