The author (Robert Louis Stevenson) uses these characters to change the way the story is told and how the main character(s) are introduced.
Dr. Jekyll (protagonist) is the main character. Mr. Hyde (antagonist) is Dr. Jekyll but he is Dr. Jekyll's "evil side"
Mr. Utterson is the person who the book and readers follow, we see everything from his view.
A man named Mr. Utterson, who is a laywer and has known a scientist for a long time named Dr. Jekyll, had recently changed Dr. Jekyll's will so that Mr. Hyde would recieve all of Jekyll's belongings after he dies. But, a little while after making Dr. Jekyll's will, Mr. Utterson hears that Mr. Hyde had trampled a girl and goes to talk to Jekyll about Mr. Hyde, but Jekyll is always working on his research and never sees anyone. Soon afterward, Utterson tries to locate Hyde...
After he encounters Hyde he finally sees Dr. Jekyll who tells him to just forget about Hyde. So he does, for a year, then, Mr. Hyde makes the front page again, for another murder. This time, the police were involved and Mr. Hyde was forced to run, and he vanishes. A few months later, Dr. Jekyll's butler goes to Utterson and asks him for help because Jekyll had locked himself in his labratory and all of his servants were worried for him. So, they all break into his lab and they find Mr. Hyde's body, but, he was in Jekyll's clothing. Later, he opens a letter from Jekyll that helps explain everything.
I believe that the main conflict in this story is between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Both of them are complete opposites, one is good, one evil.
Man Vs. Man or Man Vs. Self
Resolution??
A central theme of the story is that there is good and bad in everyone, and if we let out only the bad, that is not good for ourselves or those around us.
How is this played out??
Hyde- The "free" side of everyone
Jekyll- The better side of everyone
I think so...
