TIMELINE

Herophilus

325-255

BC

Herophilus is known to some as the father of anatomy. He made many important discoveries and was the first person ever to dissect a human body. That's important because he learned a lot about the body that we didn't know before.

Invention of the

Microscope

1590

At around the year 1590, a man named Zacharius Jannssen invented the microscope. The microscope is very important in modern medicine because it can help us learn a lot about things we cannot see with our bare eyes, and we can do research on different bacterias and cells in the human body so we can better understand it.

Blood Transfusions

1659

In the year 1659, architect Sir Christopher Wren began to experiment with the idea of transferring blood from one living thing to another. He began on animals, then did an animal to human experiment. This is important because it is a discovery that still benefits us today. Many hospitals still use blood transfusions to save lives every day.

Discovery of Cells

1670

At around 1670, a Dutch scientist named Anton van Leeuwenhoek discovered cells. He is known as the father of microbiology. This is important because it is vital that doctors understand cells so that they can tell what's going on in a patient's body and monitor their cell count.

Inoculations

In 1701, Venetian physician Giacomo Pylarini began to experiment with inoculations to prevent the disease of smallpox. It's important because his discovery would later lead to the invention of vaccines, which are an important part of modern day medicine.

1701

Vaccines

In 1796, the first vaccine for smallpox was successfully created by Edward Jenner. This is important because there are now many vaccines in our society that have saved many lives.

1796

Stethoscope

In 1816, the stethoscope was invented by Rene Laennec. This is important because the stethoscope has helped doctors all over the world examine patients' heart rates and breathing patterns. It has been extremely beneficial.

1816

Germs

1857

In 1857, Louis Pasteur makes a discovery and identifies germs as the cause of many diseases. This is important because it is easier to battle a disease if you have information on how it originates, and we can help try to keep germs away so we don't get the disease.

First Contact Lenses

1887

In 1887, the first contact lenses. It's unclear who exactly was the first to develop them; I found a lot of conflicting accounts. Contacts are important because they have helped many people be able to see and have further enhanced the technology of the medical world.

Aspirin

1899

In 1899, a man named Felix Hoffman invented Aspirin. This is important because Aspirin is still used today to reduce fever, dull pains, and many other uses. People still rely on Aspirin a lot and it has helped a lot of people get better.

X-Ray

1895

The first x-ray was invented by accident in 1895 by Wilhelm Roentgen. It's important because we use x-ray a lot now to examine what's going on inside someone in order to give a more accurate diagnosis.

Blood Classification

1901

In 1901, a man named Karl Landsteiner introduced the first system that could help doctors classify the different blood types. This is important when it comes to things like blood transfusions, in which you need to know what kind of blood a person has in order to give them the same type they have.

The Band-Aid

In 1920, the band-aid was invented by Earl Dickson. This invention is important because people everywhere use band-aids to cover up wounds, from minor scratches and cuts, to a wound that's just gotten stitches. They are a supremely useful invention.

1920

Insulin

In 1922, insulin was first used to treat diabetes. This is important because it saved the lives of many people who would have died as a result of diabetes. Now, thanks to insulin, they can live their best life.

1922

Penicillin

Penicillin was invented in 1928 by Sir Alexander Fleming. It is important because there is now a whole family of penicillin based medicines that help cure various different illnesses. I'm actually allergic so it hasn't benefited my personally, but it's helped lots of other people.

1928

Influenza Vaccine

The influenza vaccine is important because it has helped a lot less people get the flu, which killed many people when it first came about. This vaccine has probably saved many lives.

1945

Human Heart Transplant

1967

The very first human heart transplant was performed in 1967 by a large medical team led by Christiaan Barnard. This is important because heart transplants can save lives, if a person's heart is failing and they need a different one.

CAT-Scans

1975

The CAT-scan was invented in 1975 by Robert S. Ledley. CAT scans are important because they can help doctors get a very accurate idea of what is going on inside of a patient so they can give a proper diagnosis.

Smallpox Eradicated

1980

In 1980, the smallpox vaccine successfully resulted in the total eradication of the disease. This is important because it proves that vaccines can be helpful, and now nobody can ever get smallpox.

First Clone

1996

In 1996, the first clone was made out of a sheep named Dolly. This is important because it means that humans could also possibly make clones, and that would open a whole world of possibilities.

2020

Nothing important happened in 2020 I just needed a 21st slide for symmetry
