Summary

In the beginnign of this book Max and Zena need to get away from the Nazi soldiers. They start running and finally end up on a farm where they fall asleep. Soon after they are awaken by a farmer, he lets them hide in his barn. A couple of hours later a few Nazi soldiers come in the barn but don't find Max and Zena. When the Nazi soldiers are finally gone from the farm Max and Zena come out. Three other people that Max and Zena didn't know about come out from under one of the floor boards in the barn. One of them is their Aunt Hannah who they thought left to go to America. They find out Aunt Hannah and the two other people Martin and Lev are soldiers fighting against the Nazis and they plan surprise attacks, they are called partisans .

Summary

In the middle of this book Max

and Zena go to the secret camp

with Martin, Lev and Aunt Hannah.

They go through Loda forest to get to

the camp, but the Nazis start

bombing the forest.

They decide to stay in the forest

and proceed to go to the camp

because they think the nazis are

trying to get them out of the forest,

then they will capture them once

there out. Max also gets injured

along the way. They all get

seperated, but find each other

and take max back to the camp

to try and make him better.

Summary

In the end of the book Max, Zena, Martin,

Lev and Aunt Hannah finally get to the camp

and heel max's woond. There were other

partisans there to. Aunt Hannah, Martin

and Lev also went out later that day. They

came back with Max and Zena's dad. He

had escaped from the Nazi train and made

it back to the Esties, where they used to live.

Two and a half years later Max, Zena and their

dad went on a ship to America arriving in New

York and they lived happy life from then on .

Solution

Problem

The problem is that the Nazi invasion is happening and Max and Zena are hiding, trying to escape and not get caught by the Nazi soldiers. There is also a bombing in Loda forest (where their secret camp is.)

The solution is that a spy lets Max and Zena hide in his barn andthey find their Aunt Hannah. They hide out in a secret camp the Nazis don't know about and are safe there. in the end they also move to America and live a happy life there.

Main Ideas

The main ideas of the story are that Max and Zena try and not get caught by the Nazi soldiers. Along the way they find their Aunt Hannah who they thought left to go to America before the invasion. They also eventually find their dad who was taken by the Nazi soldiers a few years ago. The last big thing that happens is that the Nazis start bombing Loda forest. Max, Zena, Lev, Martain and Aunt Hannah need to run to the camp, but they get stopped by three soldiers and Max gets injured along the way.

Ratings and recommendations

I give this book 4.5 stars out of 5 stars because it was very interesting and gave me a little bit of knowledge about what it would feel like to live at that time in the world. I also liked it because it was very easy for me to picture in my mind. Another reason I liked this book was because it was sad, but not very intense. The only thing I would have changed about this book is that I would have liked to know about what happened after Max and Zena found their dad and Aunt Hannah, instead of the book just ending after they were all safe and found their dad.
