A Deconstruction of Crisp's Birthday Party

Introduction

Start

Crisp’s birthday party is a story-driving event in The Back of the Turtle. Crisp, Gabriel, and Mara are in attendance. Sonny and the Taiwanese sailors are hidden in the fog. The party takes place at the hot spring, which is covered in concealing fog, leading to a lot unseen by the guests. During the party, Crisp and Mara perform a dramatic retelling of The Creation Story. At the end of the story, Crisp vanishes, falling into the hot spring below, not to be seen for 40 pages. We believe the party scene is the most pivotal moment for Crisp’s character.

The Story

- Creation Stories are almost universal across cultures and societies throughout the world.

- At the end of the creation story, we learn that the woman gave birth to two twins, one right-handed and the left-handed

- This is an obvious parallel to Crisp, a fantastical and chaotic individual and his brother, a man of order and strict rules.

- There is also a broader message the within this which is that exclusively by working together could the different characters of the novel at any point reconstruct their harmed lives and revive their broken world.

- This has obvious applications within the real world as the effects of climate change continue to be felt and the required global effort it will take to stem the looming disaster.

The Story

Sonny's Visit

The Visit

-Sonny’s visit represents Crisp’s role as a caregiver and leader in Samaritan Bay.

-The food shows that Crisp wanted Sonny to come to the party.

-What had Sonny made of the gift? [The food at the party]” [201]

-Crisp gives Sonny the gift because he feels that it is his duty to protect the people of Samaritan Bay.

-It also reflects his enduring nature. Even though Sonny never talks to him, he still feeds him and loves him.

-Sonny’s visit first shows any kind of hospitality to the “Ghost Indians” (The Taiwanese People).

The Fog

- The party left a lot unsaid

- Crisp engineered the party to turn out this way

- He manifests Himself in the party

- Sonny meets the “ghost Indians” in the fog

- The party leaves us with more questions than answers

What does Water Symbolize?

The Water

- Relates to the creation myth Crisp tells.

- Nicholas dying.

- The nine water pools.

- The symbolism of the number nine.

- Nicholas Crisp is an amalgamation of mythologies.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Nicholas Crisp’s birthday party is the most pivotal scene for his character in The Back of the Turtle. The creation story is an important metaphor for the characters and situations in the novel. The hot water and the hot springs symbolize Crisp’s godlike traits and connect the creation story to the characters. Sonny’s visit shows Crisp’s caring and leading nature, while also connecting the Taiwanese people to the story. The fog reinforces Crisp’s mythological traits and helps fill the atmosphere with mystery. And Crisp bringing Mara and Gabriel together drives the plot of their relationship. This scene captures and drives Crisp’s character and extends the plot immensely.

The End

The True Intention

My part of this presentation is about Crisp’s Intention of Bringing Gabriel & Mara Together so let’s get into it. The brooding lovers Mara and Gabriel both lost their families and crisp was just trying to strengthen their love. Gabriel and Mara are both scarred from losing their families so Crisp is trying to heal the scars by bringing them together. Mara used to live on the Smoke River reserve, alongside Gabriel’s family and was best friends with Gabriel’s sister, Lilly. So they were already close, Crisp just helped tie the knot. that was my part-time for the conclusion.
