The soviets launch the first dog (Lakia) into orbit. She only survived 5 to 7
hours due to lack of oxygen.
The Americans launched the first satellite, Explorer 1 into orbit for 2 months and then burned up in Earth's atmosphere when attempting a landing.
On April 12th, 1961, Yuri became the first person in space. He did one orbit, then when he came into orbit, the spaceship was meant to crash-land, so he had to bail in a parachute in the ocean and landed 2 hours after lift off.
On May 25, 1963 John F. Kennedy promised that America would get a man on the moon by 1970.
On May 30, 1966, NASA sent a robotic space ship to land on the moon and test to see if they could make a soft landing. After a soft landing, the space ship took pictures of the moons surface. Scientists used this vital information to calculate how humans can make a soft landing

On July 20th, 1969, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong took "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", said Neil. The first words on the moon were "The Eagle has landed".

On April 13, 1970, Apollo 13 was sent to space to land on the moon. Sadly, part of the ship exploded and using what was on board, the crew made it back to Earth and lived.
By 2025, NASA will send a human to an asteroid, by 2030, NASA will have a person on Mars.
On April 28, 2001 millionaire, Dennis Tito became the first space tourist after paying around 20 million dollars and rode the Russian Soyuz rocket. He had to train for 900 hours just to orbit for a week!
