Communication

World War II

Communication on the Ground

ACT 1

Part 1:

Signalers used variety of devices and methods to send messages. Telephones were dependable, but their long and strung-out wires were unguarded to shellfire and often cut.

ACT 2

Part 2:

Burying the lines deep into the ground was labour intensive and time consuming, and still did not always protect against shellfire.

ACT 3

Part 3:

Pigeons were surprisingly effective in carrying messages, but required special handlers and could become confused by the noise of artillery barrages.

Problems

Problems:

Communication often broke down between the attacking infantry and their headquarters in the rear. Whenever this happened, commanders did'nt know the location of their troops and were unable to support them with accurate artillery fire, ammunition, and supplies. This failure in communication was never fully solved during world war II.

Types of Communication:

Here are a few communication devices used in the war:

1. Signaling lamp.

2. Flares.

3. Morse Code.

4. Telephone Wire.

5. Communication cable.

6. SCR-300.

1. Morse Code: When used over radio, the dashes and dots are represented by a series of long and short tones.

2. SCR-300: A radio manufactured like a backpack.

3. Flares and signal lamps: Tropps on the ground used various methods to send messages to air crafts.

How do they work?
