The three major settings in this book are Uncle Storch's farm, Brooklyn, and New York City.
Some main characters are Nate, Eliza, Theo, Uncle Storch, and Paul.
It was any other day. Ever since Nate's dad died, he had been living with his mean uncle Storch. Eliza was tending to the fields while her son Theo was playing outside. While watching Theo, Nate saw him pick up a stick and throw it at Storch. Nate took the blame and suffered the severe punishment. Eliza told Nate to runaway as fast as he could.
Nate ran as far as he could all the way to the docks. He the snuck onto a ship to New York. When he arived, he was surprised the docks were empty there were no ships, no captains, nothing. Then he remembered why the war was going on. The Americans were preparing for war. Then these huge ships came into view then out of nowhere a big cannonball hit the docks. Nate ran to the woods and past this army camp. Nate heard his name and he saw who it was. It was his old friend Paul from his dad's ship who went to the army. They talked for a little and Nate decided to stay there with him for a while.
The people there were really nice to hiim. They would sing songs and tell stories around the fire at night. One day the American soldiers decided to travel to Brooklyn and take out the British camps there with a height advantage from the hill. While they were walking, through the woods they were caught by suprise when the Britsh ambushed them from the hill. There were bullets everywere, explosins and then boom a cannon had shot right next to him. Nate fell down and laid there. When he awoke, he grabbed a Hessian uniform as a disguise. He got away safely to the base. Then one day he got a letter. It said that his Uncle Storch had died and that his belongings were being given to Nate.
Nate's Dad dies and he's forced to live with his mean Uncle Storch and his slave Eliza and her son Theo.
He decides to run to New York
to work on a ship but ends up joining the army with his dad 's old shipmate Paul.
The main idea is to stay strong even when times seem bad.
I would rate this book a 9/10. It was a great book. But, I thought it was an easy read.
