Recognizing Helping Verbs

A helping verb helps the main verb to make a statement.

No man can serve two masters. (The verb can helps the main verb serve to show action.)

The hope of the righteous shall be gladness. (The verb shall helps the main verb be to link gladness to the subject hope.)

There will be rewards for faithfulness. (The verb will helps the main verb be to indicate existence.)

Note: The forms of "be" may be linking as well as helping verbs. The forms of "have" and "do" may also be action verbs. The last word in a Verb Phrase determines the kind of Phrase.

If the last word is an action verb, the phrase is an action verb phrase. If the last word is a linking verb, the phrase is a linking verb phrase.

A verb phrase is a main verb and its helping verbs.

Quite often a verb phrase is interrupted by other words.

The word not is a common interrupter.
