Popular sovereignty is a government where all power is vested in the people. In the USA popular sovereignty is shown throughout our government. Every official in our government is either elected (President, Vice President, Senate, House of Representatives) or is chosen by an electee (Supreme Court, Cabinet, etc.). Popular sovereignty is shown in the first words of our constitution, "We the people".
Limited Government is a governmental practice where constitutional law prevents the government from turning its power on the people in a controlling or unfair way. The U.S. government uses limited government by putting restrictions on what the government can do through the constitution. The bill of rights shows many examples of limited government such as the freedom of speech and the government not being able to enter your house without a warrant.
The separation of powers is the division of power throughout different government branches. The purpose of the separation of power is to keep a select few people from having all of the power. The seperation of power is created by having three different branches that all have power over certain things.
Checks and balances are a way for the branches to stay in check and make sure that one branch does not hold too much power. The government has three branches (judiciary, legislative, executive) and they each have some form of control over each other, this helps keep the branch's power at a lower level so that dramatic changes don't happen within the government.
Judicial review is a practice created by the constitution that allows the courts to review all laws created and decide if they are in violation of the constitution. This allows for the constitution, the guiding principles of American society, to always be held as the highest authority. This keeps the government from using abusive authority on the people.
Federalism is a type of government in which two or more systems of government are in charge of the same territory. In this case, it is the federal, state, and county governments. Federalism allows for specific areas of the country to have their own specific laws designed for the region, the culture, and the economy.
