Greek Dark Age

Dark ages in greece

- from 1100 to 750 bc

- much like the much later english dark ages, writing disappeared (linear B)

- even without writing, it is still an important and influential era of greece

- started by invasion of the dorians and the fall of the mycenaeans

- disbanded the upper class led to a more politically charged climate

Importance

-lack of mediterannian influence, meaning no outside influence in creating institutions

- rise of different dialects due to spoken word and oral traditions

- Hellenes (greek speaking people) and Barbaric (any language other than greek) language barriers

- City states emerged as a result

-Doric is found in nrothwest of greece

- Doric dialect migrated to southern greece

- hypothetically during this time Dorics gained control of Peloponnesus (south greece) and spread the language

- Spread not only language, but culture and architecture (parthenon is is doric stye)

-Doric culture was seen as barbaric and uneducated, located outside perimeters of athens and other scholastic states

-Heavily opposed sides, the HYllies being the most prominent

-Sparta and war like culture was prominent

-Doric people were descendents of Hercules

-upon his death were banished from their land (northwest) and returned to take land (south greece) as it was seen as it was thier right
