Manufacturing

Manufacturing

Nike began with production in the US, but soon outsourced to factories in China, more specifically Vietnam. Each factory in Vietnam has a different owner with Nike owning none of these facilities. Instead Nike has contracts with independent resource gathering companies to buy the raw materials used in producing Nike shoes. The factories that produce components and the finished shoes are not owned by Nike, but are independent from Nike. Nike negotiates with them and gets lower prices than if Nike had their own factories ("The Journey of Nike Shoes").

Raw Materials

Materials

While Nike has been recently known to utilize less harmful materials in their process, it is difficult to know the overall impact of the materials they use. This is because Nike only reveals information about materials in their “Considered design”

line, which is part of their sustainability initiative ("The Journey of Nike Shoes").

1

Synthetic Leather

The majority of Nike shoes utilize synthetic leather since it is cheaper to use than real leather. This industry uses several harmful chemicals in order to preserve the appearance of "real leather." In addition to this, the tannery effluent used also contains large amounts of pollutants that impact the land, air, and water supply making it a highly polluting use of material (Nikeshoes).

2

Rubber

Nike has recently been known to use more and more environmentally preferred rubber. Well over 70% of Nike shoes now use environmentally preferred rubber. Nike revealed this environmentally preferred rubber in 2002, which is altered by incorporating more benign accelerators and vegetable oils. Furthermore, they modify the processing in order to avoid a high toll on the environment (Nikeshoes).

3

Cotton

Nike claims that they are using more and more organic cotton every year and plan to keep this trend going. Organic cotton is cotton that is harvested without chemical pesticides, fertilizer, and defoliants. This means that the impact on the environment with harvesting cotton for the shoes could be substantially lowered (Nikeshoes).

The Creation

Process

In order to make a Nike shoe material is first cut in the shapes and forms needed. These pieces are then sewn together on the upper section above the sole. Then the sole is prepared. Once this is done the upper attachment is prepared. Then the bottom heel is attached and shaped into the final form. Finally, the finishing touches are made and any necessary accessories are then attached ("The Journey of Nike Shoes").

Conditions

Conditions

While Nike focuses on female empowerment for much of their campaigns the same can't be offered to their employees who are vastly female. Nike has been accused of creating a culture of gender discrimination and sexual harassment. In addition to this, Nike is lacking on providing evidence that they pay their workers a living wage ("How Ethical is Nike").

Impact

Waste

As stated before, it is difficult to truly figure out how much waste comes from Nike shoes and the materials used to make them. In addition to this, Nike uses their own index to

interpret information about the materials sustainability. This makes it even more difficult to find any

evidence to back up their claims of sustainable design. Most shoes are most likely thrown out and not recycled, however, many shoes may make it back to Nike since they began the "Reuse A Shoe" program. These shoes may get another life as they are repaired or are torn up to be used in new shoes.
