As we all know, music is something almost everyone enjoy. On average, a person listen 18,7 hours of music per week. Music can be a great way to help you concentrate, to be motivated or even just to relax. However, it also help people connect to eachother and that is what we are going to prove in this presentation while talking about music around the world, music for social causes and synesthesia.
synesthesia is a neurological phenomenom that affects 4% of the population. It is characterized by unintentionally associate a sense with another. For example, the most common are synesthetes that associate letters and numbers with color.
There are many subtypes of synesthesia, each being a combination of two senses a synesthete can associate, such as Auditory-tactile (a sound creates a physical sensation), Grapheme-color (association of colors and letters) or Chromesthesia. This last one is an association between sounds and colors that may allow some people to « see » the music. The color that the sound can evoke for people that have Chromesthesia may not be the same for someone else even though it is the exact same sound. The sound-to-color synesthesia can occur for music but also for speech and everyday sound (for example a car honk). This condition makes the synesthetes appreciate music in another way then normal people does.
The OSM did a project for their 85th anniversary in collaboration with synesthetes. Their idea was to represent the depth of the music in a way that has never been done before. They wanted people to be able to « see » the music and appreciate it differently. With the help of a technological program and the descriptions of the synesthetes, they were able to translate the music into colors. With the project of the OSM, synesthesia can allow us to appreciate music in a different way then how we are used to. Synesthetes could also share their vision of it through this advertising campaign.
Music for social causes has the goal to denounce the social issues present in our society and/or encourage the audience to take actions to fix the problems.
Music has the potential to move and change people in a way nothing else can. It can change the mood and encourage a type of behaviour. The behaviour of humans is easily influenced by the way they feel. That gives music the power to fix certain problems.
For example, when we are working out, we want to put an upbeat type of music to motivate us.
So, the usage of music regarding the social injustices in the world is an excellent way to convey the message. It will have an emotional impact on the audience and open their eyes on the issues.
To spread the word on the social issues, it is crucial to reach as many persons as possible and there are many ways to do that.
Concerts have always been very efficient to reach large crowds. It also allows people to bound with the others present at the concert because they most likely share similar interests and music taste.
When you are a popular artist, you have a big audience to who you can address issues. Doing collaborations with multiple artists helps too. For example, the song We are the world by USA for Africa is a collaboration with many famous artists like Michael Jackson or Lionel Richie.
Technology gives music the opportunity to address its message to a bigger crowd. The radio is a good example because people hear the songs over and over and start to catch the lyrics and the message. There are many music platforms where you can listen to music and there are social medias like Tiktok where it’s easy to discover new songs and spread a message.
Music has a moral and emotional influence on our society. With intentional messages through the sounds and lyrics, music can make a positive impact on the audience and potentially bring people together.
A good example of music for social causes is Where is the Love? by Black Eyed Peas. In this song, the message is clear, and the lyrics are very meaningful and touching. It talks about everything that is wrong with our world (war, hatred, discrimination, violence, etc.) and how it is affecting the youth. The line “can you practice what you preach” encourages the audience to take actions.
Even if different songs are coming from different places and cultures, many types of music are very similar around the world. Music helps people from everywhere connect. Even if the instruments are different, music can be created anywhere.
Benefits of music
It's not surprising that music became so popular almost everywhere. Dancing and singing with others has been shown in several studies to directly impact neuro-chemicals in the brain, many of which play a role in closeness and connection. Also, singing with a group of people makes our brain release endorphins. So, you can be from any culture and enjoy music from other cultures, because they can all have the same benefits for you.
There are hundreds of different instruments around the world. Some can be very different from the ones from your cultures, so it's very interesting to learn more about them. For example, the koto is a traditional instrument from Japan. The berimbu from Brazil and the rondador from Ecuador are also special instruments that aren't common here. It's fascinating how music is made with different instruments in different places, but can still be similar.
Has previously mentioned, different types of music are similar around the world. For example, love music are low in almost every cultures. Dancing and healing music both have many in common in general, no matter where they come from. Some types are known for having a purpose, so it's not surprising to see how they sound very similar. Lullabies are a good example, they are almost always slow and fluid, because they are made to calm children.
Music has many great ways to make us connect. Music for social causes motivates people to get together and solve an issue. The OSM project, on the other hand, was able to create a completely unique experience that allowed people to "see" music, with the help of synesthetes. And even if music is from different places in the world, it always has some similarities, and is a great way to communicate. There is so much to learn about it, we hope you discovered more about music today.
