Black Mirror

Black Mirror

The series and the director

My opinion

The storie

The story takes place in a world where everyone rates each other from 0 to 5, with the highest rated getting access to better services. Lacie lives only to improve her 4.2 rating and is looking to move out of the flat. Lacie is also in awe of Naomi, her beautiful childhood friend who has always kept her grade above 4.6, which she remembers by scanning her social media profiles and keeping a stuffed animal they made together when they were 5 years old.

Lacie finds the perfect flat where she could live a smooth and ideal married life but she has to achieve a minimum score of 4.5 to qualify for a rent reduction. Soon after, Naomi contacts her: she has just become engaged and asks her childhood friend to be her maid of honour. Lacie sees a unique opportunity to boost her grade with a polished speech and carefully prepares her text.

I didn't particularly like this episode however, the subject matter is very interesting and important as it deals with a subject that could soon be a reality: the importance of social networks in our daily lives. Moreover, this series has a pronounced dystopian side. The fact is that this already exist in China. Indeed, this world is based on numbers, with the effect that this society is caste and that one is no longer free to express oneself because a bad gesture could lower your grade and make your life even more horrible, a life whose only goal is to always get a better grade in order to have advantages.

Snow Piercer

SnowPiercer

The series and the director

Snowpiercer is an American post-apocalyptic dystopian television series created by Josh Friedman and Graeme Manson and broadcast from May 17 2020 is an adaptation of the French comic book The Snowman by Jacques Lob , Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette from 1982.

Jacques Lob, born on 19 August 1932 in Paris and died on 24 May 1990 in Château-Thierry, was a French comic book writer, best known as a scriptwriter.

The storie

My opinion

I enjoyed the dystopian side of this series, but also the plot. Indeed, the context of the story appeals to me, and the plot of the series is quite interesting as well as all the twists and turns associated with it. Despite this, the fact that the characters never manage to reach their goal makes this film more of a psychological torture than a series in my opinion. Afterwards, this allows the series to reinforce the dystopian side that is asserted throughout the series.

Seven years after the world has become a vast frozen expanse, the survivors have found refuge in a train that is constantly moving. The 1,001-car train travels around the world at the rate of 2.7 revolutions per year. The engineers, led by Melanie Cavill, run the train, while Ruth is responsible for looking after the privileged passengers. On board, class warfare, social injustice and internal politics cause unrest.

When a body is found emasculated in the train's third class, former policeman Andre Layton , a sans-ticket and revolutionary leader, is tasked with investigating; soon, class tensions explode, and the series explores the unfolding of these struggles for the direction of the train, in every sense of the word.

The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner

The movie and the director

The Maze Runner is an American post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Wes Ball, released in 2014. It is an adaptation of the first volume of James Dashner's novel cycle The Maze Runner.

James Dashner, born November 26, 1972 in Austell, Georgia, is an American science fiction and fantasy novelist.

My opinion

The story

I rather enjoyed this film because of its story and originality, plus I like the dystopian feel of this film from the rapid upheavals and numerous twists and turns that take this film from a quiet life among high school students to a nightmare.

An adolescent boy wakes up in a freight lift with no memory of who he is. He finds himself among other boys in a vast grassy area called the 'block', surrounded by high concrete walls. The young men (or 'blockers') have formed a rudimentary society, each taking on specialised tasks. Their leader, Alby, dictates the rules: no laziness, no aggression and, most importantly, never go over the wall.

West World

Westworld

The movie and the director

Westworld is an American science fiction television series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, produced by J. J. Abrams and Bryan Burk, and broadcast since 2 October 2016. It is a television adaptation of the 1973 film Mondwest (Westworld) written and directed by Michael Crichton.

Jonathan Nolan is a British-American screenwriter and film producer, born on 6 June 1976 in London. He is the brother of director Christopher Nolan and is known for his contributions to many of his projects. They were nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay at the 74th Academy Awards for the feature film Memento.

The story

My opinion

I liked it because of its futuristic aspect but also because of the warning of technological progress and finally because of the dystopian aspect generated by the transformation of a technological utopia into a nightmare.

Westworld is a futuristic theme park recreating different worlds, including the 19th century American West. It is populated by androids, called "hosts", which are reset at the end of each narrative loop. Visitors, called 'newcomers' or guests, can do whatever they want without any consequences. But following an update of the android program, the park's managers will have to deal with several bugs in their behaviour.

Welcome to Gattaca

Gattaca

The movie and the director

Welcome to Gattaca (Gattaca) is an American dystopian science fiction thriller film written and directed by Andrew Niccol and released in 1997. It is Andrew Niccol's first film as a director.

Andrew Niccol is a New Zealand writer, producer and director, born on 10 June 1964 in Paraparaumu.

My opinion

The storie

I rather liked this film because of the dystopian nature of the society it portrays, which is divided into castes, each of which is determined by DNA, thus preventing access to the pleasures of life according to one's DNA.

In a future world, we will be able to choose the genotypes of children. In this high-tech society where eugenics is practised on a massive scale, parents' gametes are sorted and selected in order to conceive an out-of-body child with the fewest defects and the greatest possible benefit to their company.

Despite official bans, companies and employers use discreet DNA tests to screen employees; naturally conceived individuals are effectively relegated to menial tasks.

Guilty crown

Guilty Crown

The series and the director

Guilty Crown is an animated television series created by Tetsurō Araki. It is produced by Production I.G and was broadcast in the noitaminA time slot on Fuji TV between October 2011 and March 2012 in Japan. In the main French-speaking countries, the licence is acquired by Kazé.

The story

My opinion

I rather liked this Japanese animation series because of the drawing and the colours. The story is also very interesting and crazy. I also appreciate its dystopian side.

Tetsurō Araki , born November 5, 1976 in Sayama, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, is a Japanese anime director. He is best known for his work on Death Note and Attack of the Titans.

Following the outbreak and spread of a highly lethal virus, Japan had to call on the help of many foreign countries to stop the pandemic. Now under the control of this coalition, the inhabitants live in fear of the Anti-Bodies, a unit created to eradicate the virus and abusing its authority with impunity. Opposite them is a group of terrorists ready to rebel against the system.

Definition

What is a dystopia ?

A dystopia is a fictional narrative depicting an imaginary society organised in such a way that it is impossible to escape from it and whose rulers can exercise total authority, without constraints of separation of powers, over citizens who can no longer exercise their free will.

A dystopia can also be seen as a utopia that turns into a nightmare and thus leads to a counter-utopia. It can be seen as a counter-utopia.

The first use of the term dystopia is attributed to John Stuart Mill, in an 1868 speech to the British Parliament

The first dystopian novel was: "Le monde tel qu'il sera" by Emile Souvestre published in 1846.

However, the modern dystopia really appeared at the beginning of the 20th century with Jack London's The Iron Heel. Published in 1908, this novel describes a fascist capitalist tyranny with a ruthless repressive system.

Books

Animal Farm

Animal Farm

The author and the book

The novel begins with a dream in which the animals themselves take charge of their own destiny: driven by the ideals of an old pig named Sage the Elder, they decide to revolt against their master, Mr. Jones, in the hope of leading an autonomous life of equality, mutual aid and peace for all.

The farm is now under the control of the animals. The farm is now run in accordance with the seven commandments, which advocate pacifism while defining the specificities of the animals, which are presented as an asset. The enemy is clearly designated: man must disappear from the place, a cohesion must be created between the animals and reinforced around the human threat.

Animal Farm is a short novel by George Orwell, published in 1945. The novel describes a farm where the animals revolt, take over and drive out the humans.

George Orwell, born on 25 June 1903 in Motihari (India) during the British Raj and died on 21 January 1950 in London, was a British writer, essayist and journalist.

He also wrote 1984 in which he gave birth to the concept of Big Brother

My opinion

The story

I enjoyed Animal Farm because it is a book that satirises a theme that is Stalinism. Moreover, it associates each animal with a part of the Russian people according to their characteristics. It is a double criticism of the ideology of Stalinism, because at that time, farm animals were only considered as cattle and stupid beings devoid of intelligence. It thus represents a dystopia because of the impossibility for animals to achieve the happiness they so desire.

It is an apologue written in the form of an animal fable, but also a dystopia. In this novel, Orwell offers a satire of the Russian Revolution and a critique of the Soviet regime, in particular Stalinism, and beyond that, of authoritarian regimes and totalitarianism.

The Handmaid's Tale

The handmaid's Tale

The author and the book

Women are divided into classes: Wives, who dominate the house and are the only women with any semblance of power; Marthas, who maintain the house and also do the cooking; Econowomen, wives of poor men (and who combine the functions of Wife, Martha and Handmaid into one entity); Aunts, who indoctrinate the Handmaids dressed in loose scarlet robes whose role is human reproduction; and Jezebels, illegal prostitutes but much sought after by the Commanders.

This novel of anticipation is Margaret Atwood's first dystopia. The book was adapted for the cinema under the same title by Volker Schlöndorff in 1990, in opera, ballet and other art forms.

Margaret Eleanor "Peggy" Atwood, born November 18, 1939 in Ottawa, is a Canadian novelist, poet and literary critic. She is one of Canada's best-known writers, particularly for her novel The Handmaid's Tale

My opinion

I liked this book because of its dystopian aspect, in fact, it describes a totalitarian regime in which women have no rights and are generally considered as slaves - this world would be ruled by men and the role of women in society does not go beyond cooking. This story also seems to me to be a critique of machismo and of an entirely patriarchal society, which allows it to be denounced.

The story

The novel describes a dystopian future in which religion dominates politics in a totalitarian regime, where people are categorised and have very specific roles, and where women are devalued to the point of subjugation.

Fahrenheit 451

The story

Fahrenheit 451

The author and the book

In a future society where television is a "family" and reading is forbidden, the firemen have the task of burning all books whose possession is illegal.

One evening on his way home, Guy Montag, a fireman by trade, meets a strange young girl: Clarisse McClellan. She has a most eccentric attitude and asks him: "Do you ever read the books you burn? Are you happy?

When he returns home, Montag is troubled and can't stop wondering. He finds his wife Mildred unconscious, knocked out by an excess of sedatives.

One day, alone with his wife, Montag reveals his secret: behind the air-conditioning grill, books are hidden. His wife, panicked, becomes his unwilling accomplice.

Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian fantasy novel by Ray Bradbury published in 1953 in the United States by Ballantine Books. The book won the 1954 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

The title refers to the self-ignition point, in degrees Fahrenheit, of paper. This temperature is equivalent to 232.8°C.

Raymond Douglas Bradbury, also known as Ray Bradbury, born August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois, and died June 5, 2012 in Los Angeles, California, was an American writer and a leading figure in the fantasy genre. He is particularly known for his Martian Chronicles, written in 1950... , and especially Fahrenheit 451, a dystopian novel published in 1953.

My opinion

I liked this book because it is a dystopian critique of totalitarian regimes in which freedom of expression and knowledge are banned and destroyed in order to manipulate the population. In this dystopian world ruled by a totalitarian power, everyone is ignorant, showing the power of information over society.

V For Vandetta

V for Vendetta

The author and the book

The Ear and the Eye manage the audio and video surveillance of public and private spaces, the Hand is the party's dangerous, all-rights militia, the Nose is the government's criminal and scientific police, and the Voice is the propaganda department. The party controls all the media, promoting hatred of homosexuals, blacks and Jews through, for example, the TV series Storm Saxon in which a brave blond man fights these minorities.

V for Vendetta is a comic book series produced from 1982 to 1990. Alan Moore, born 18 November 1953 in Northampton, is a British comic book writer whose best-known works are the comics Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell.

My opinion

I enjoyed reading this book because of its originality and its story. Indeed, it comes from the comic book's layout: it is divided into acts, each of which is divided into different scenes, as in the theatre. Moreover, the main character has a strong addiction to poetry and the art of language. He therefore often expresses himself in prose, giving a poetic aspect that I greatly appreciated. Its dystopian aspect probably comes from the fact that in this dictatorial society, all freedoms are no more and all works of culture and knowledge were burnt to make room only for propaganda.

The story

In 1997, England is ruled by the fascist Norsefire Party, which came to power shortly after the nuclear war that devastated most of the world. The party is led by Commander Adam James Susan, who spends his days in front of Fate, the super-computer and mainstay of the party. The Ear, the Eye, the Hand, the Nose and the Voice are the five factions that run the various aspects of the regime.

A Brave New World

Brave New World

The author and the book

In the course of the story, the reader discovers a large number of characters, including Bernard Marx, an individual belonging to the upper caste of this society, and John, called "savage", because he is independent, born of a woman and living outside this social system imposed on the vast majority of human beings.

Brave New World is a dystopian fantasy novel written in 1931 by Aldous Huxley. It was published in 1932.

Aldous Huxley, born on 26 July 1894 in Godalming (UK) and died on 22 November 1963 in Los Angeles (USA), was a British writer, novelist and philosopher.

My opinion

I enjoyed reading Brave New World because it presents a world that is beautiful and perfect on the outside, but shows a lot of problems when you look inside. I also appreciate its dystopian aspect because only a part of the population can have access to a certain happiness while the other part will always live in misery, moreover, with the fertilisation technologies present in this book, freedom of expression does not exist anymore. So, this book gives me an aspect of: the worst world instead of the best one.

The story

The story depicts a futuristic, eugenic society, highly hierarchical, divided into different castes whose artificially conceived individuals are biologically and psychologically conditioned to ensure the stability and continuity of the system.

The Children of Men

The Children of Men

My opinion

The author and the book

I enjoyed this novel because of the difficult but realistic vision of an event that could happen, triggering a catastrophe and pushing humans to their limits. Moreover, it is also a dystopia because of the fact that this world, which is similar to ours, has turned into a nightmare and that, in reaction to this, happiness no longer exists.

The Children of Men is a dystopian science fiction thriller novel by Phyllis Dorothy James, published in 1992.

Phyllis Dorothy James, known as P. D. James, born on 3 August 1920 in Oxford and died on 27 November 2014 (aged 94) in the same city, was a well-known British writer of crime fiction. Her first novel, Cover Her Face, was published in 1962, her last, Death Comes to Pemberley, in 2011.

The story

The plot, set in England in 2021, revolves around the sterility that has plagued the entire planet for a quarter of a century. In this depopulating Britain, the novel focuses on a tiny group of resistance fighters whose members refuse to sink into the prevailing climate of despair, maintained by the powers that be.

1984

1984

My opinion

The author and the book

I have enjoyed this book thanks to the Universe Which is provided to us. But also because of his dystopic aspect thanks to the lack of freedom.

1984 is George Orwell's most famous novel, published in 1949.

George Orwell, born on 25 June 1903 in Motihari (India) during the British Raj and died on 21 January 1950 in London, was a British writer, essayist and journalist.

The story

He describes Britain thirty years after a nuclear war between East and West supposedly took place in the 1950s, where a totalitarian type of regime had been established, strongly inspired by elements of both Stalinism and Nazism.
