AmnioExcel Membrane is regulated as Human Cellular and Tissue-Based Product (HCT/P) under section 361 of the Public Health Service Act and is governed by the FDA Center For Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER)

Was introduced to the market in 2016.

AmnioExcel is a placenta derived allograft tissue for homologous use. Intended for repair, reconstruction, & replacement.

Examples Include:

  • Acute & Chronic Wounds
  • Diabetic Ulcers
  • Burns
  • Surgical Wounds

What makes up the technology?

It is made up of various levels of amniotic tissue combined with the presence of collagen and other growth factors.

This technology is

osteoconductive & osteinductive with the amniotic membrane acting as the conductor and the naturally occurring growth factors as the inductors.

This product can be applied anywhere with any spinal surgery that the surgeon wants to promote surgery site healing.

It comes in sheet form only.

It comes in 11 different sizes

7 of the 11 sizes cost less than $1,000

AminoExcel uses DryFlex processing which provides easy application and conformity to the wound surface.

(DryFlex is the process of dehydrating the amniotic membrane)

ADVANTAGES:

  • It is only the 2nd dehydrated amniotic allograft on the market.
  • Utilizes DryFlex processing which allows for easy application, storage, and preserves the matrix and growth factors
  • Cost Effective

DISADVANTAGES:

  • Limited to one form of application
  • Although effective, healing time is between 8-9 weeks.
  • Due to processing of the tissue, trace elements of ethanol can be left on the specimen

AmnioFix is made by MiMedx.

It was approved by the FDA on March 9, 2018 as RMAT Designation

Approved for knee injections, treating OA of the knee. It has recently been proven to be effective in other soft tissue injuries caused by trauma or other inflammed micro-tears

AmnioFix is a placental tissue allograft composed of amnion & chorion membrane to promote healing.

AmnioFix uses the Purion process to safely and gently seperate placenta tissue from blood and other impurities and dehydrate to preserve key elements associated with healing.

Due to the particulation being the most effective and requiring the most prep time, the process can result in a high fiddle factor.

Other forms are easily applied to the desired area but not as effective.

This technology is

osteoconductive & osteinductive with the amniotic membrane acting as the conductor and the naturally occurring growth factors as the inductors.

The surgeon can apply this membrane-like and ready-to-use tissue onto the laminectomy area prior to closure as well as other similar spinal bone fusions

AmnioFix comes in powder form, 6 sheet sizes, and 3 wrap sizes.

Advantages:

  • Multiple forms of application
  • Availability of targeted injections for pain relief
  • Mild out-patient procedures with less pain and shorter recovery time

Disadvantages:

  • Limited clinical research showing product efficacy
  • Injection can cause soreness and discomfort

... The Winner Is??

AmnioFix:

Although, processing properties and carrying characteritics are similar to AmnioExcel, we feel the injection option and the accompanying quick healing time frame make this the best option.
