The rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany stirred Oppenheimer's first interest in politics.
In 1936 he sided with the republic during the Civil War in Spain, where he became
acquainted with communist students. Although his fathers death in 1937 left
oppenheimer a fortune that allowed him to subsidize anti-fascist organizations, the tragic suffering inflicted by Joseph Stalin on Russian scientists led him to withdraw his associations with the communist party- in fact, he never joined the party- and at the same time reinforced in him a liberal demographic philosophy.

1963 Enrico Fermi award Dialogue
“The Enrico Fermi award goes to J. Robert Oppenheimer, for his contributions to theoretical physics and the advancement of science in the United States of America.” quoted Lyndon B. Johnson.
Lydon had Presented Oppenheimer with the Enrico Fermi Award of the Atomic Energy Commission.
“Congratulations Julius on earning the Enrico Fermi award.” Lyndon B. Johnson said.
“Thank you very much.” Oppenheimer replied.
Oppenheimer retired from the institute for advanced study in 1996 and died of throat cancer the following year. In 2014, 60 years after the proceedings that effectively ended Oppenheimer's career, the department of energy released the full, declassified transcript of the hearing. While many of the details were already known, the newly released material bolstered Oppenheimer's assertions of loyalty and reinforced the perception that brilliant scientists have been brought low by a bureaucratic cocktail of professional jealousy and McCarthyism.

Monday, July 16, 1945
Today, the bomb exploded. Successfully. Whew. The seconds leading up to its detonation were some of the most stressful of my life. It was my burden to make sure this bomb exploded properly. As the last seconds ticked off, I grew tenser. I don't even think I was breathing. I noticed myself about to topple, so I had to hold on to a post to steady myself. I don't even remember what I was thinking about as the announcer steadily counted down. But finally, when he shouted "Now!" and the bomb detonated, I was able to relax. It worked.
