Middle Ground Fallacy

Middle Ground Fallacy

Example

Definition- An error in reasoning that weakens the argument

"One of my friends told me lying is ok. My other friend told me lying is never ok. Therefore, lying must be okay sometmes."

Independent Variable

Experiment

Develop a test to support or not support your hypothesis.

Must have only 1 independent variable (the factor being tested).

Multiple Tests

What is

Experimental and Control

The test must be run multiple times.

Must have 2 setups: “Experimental” (gets the independent variable) and “Control” (does not get the independent variable).

A Midde Ground Fallacy

What is a

Hypothesis?

Analyze

How Do You

Write a Conclusion?

How can I gather data?

Make Observations

Any use of the senses to gather information.

Qualitative Observations

Anything that you see, smell, touch, taste, or hear.

Analyzing the Example

Quantitative Observations

Any observation that can be measured —

must include a number.

The Middle Ground Fallacy says the truth is always in the middle of two opposites.

A Visualized Example

State whether your hypothesis is supported by your data or not.

1

Restate your original hypothesis.

2

Use exact data to support what you have just written.

3

4

Apply error analysis: Think about what you found out in your research. Consider any improvements to your procedure.

5

Offer explanations for why you think the reults of your experiment are what they are. Ask a new question — what do you want to do next?
