DAISY BUCHANAN:
Daisy was born into a Louisville family who had lots of money. She has many suitors, but had fallen for Jay Gatsby, a poor soldier at the time. She knows Gatsby from many years before, but falls "in love" with Tom years later. Daisy had promised to wait for him while he was at war, and much later receives a letter from Gatsby telling her she should call off the wedding and wait for him. In a frenzy of confusion, she gets insanely drunk. though she gets cold feet, she realizes she cannot commit to gatsby and settles for Tom. She gives birth to her daughter, Pammy, and her family settled in East Egg, "old money", on Long Island. Daisy hopes her daughter grows up to be a "beautiful fool," meaning that in that time era, women were not appreciated at all.
Nick Carraway goes to visit his second cousin,
Daisy, and her husband Tom.
As readers we learn of Daisy’s history with Gatsby from Jordan, when she tells Nick that Daisy is in love with Gatsby. When daisy recieves a letter from Gatsby telling her not to marry Tom, she gets cold feet. although she eventually realizes that she could not commit to Gatsby and ends up going through with the wedding.
In the beginning of the novel, Nick Carraway goes to visit his second cousin Daisy, and her husband Tom. As readers, we learn of Daisy’s history where she would spend every night with a different man from Jordan. Tom and Daisy have a very unhealthy relationship, as he cheats on her all the time. Nick is invited over to Tom and Daisy's house for dinner during the first chapter of the book, and during the meal Tom gets a call from his mistress. Daisy is upset, but tries not to show it. Throughout this chapter, Daisy is suppressing her emotions from the phone call and worrying about Tom.
Daisy never cheated on her husband throughout their marriage, but Tom definitely did. He has a mistress that Daisy knows about. most of the information readers get is from Jordan, as she tells Nick that Gatsby bought his mansion in West Egg only to be near Daisy. She also tells Nick that Gatsby has asked her to convince him to set up a "date" between Gatsby and Daisy. Gatsby is scared that Daisy will refuse to see him,so he wants Nick to invite Daisy to tea. Gatsby's plan is to come to the tea at Nick’s house and surprise Daisy into seeing him.
Right before Daisy shows up for tea, Gatsby gets so afraid that he runs out into the rain. He gains the courage to come back around and ring the doorbell, soaking wet. when Daisy first sees him she is very shocked, but soon begins to have feelings for him as they start a passionate love affair. Daisy loves how passionate he is for her, and he falls very madly in love with her. This predicts trouble in the future for Daisy and Toms relationship.
Daisy and Tom go to a party at gatsby's house. Tom does not want to be there, and he very much dislikes Gatsby. So, he keeps an eye on Daisy during their time there. Nick notices that Daisy is having a bad time, because Tom upsets her by telling her that Gatsby’s fortune comes from bootlegging. But, she strongly believes that Gatsby’s wealth comes from a chain of drugstores. Gatsby is unhappy because Daisy had a bad time, and wants things to be exactly the same as they were with her before he left for the war. He wants Daisy to leave her husband, so he can be with her forever. Daisy lets gatsby believe that money can accomplish anything. Here, daisy is shown as bringing bad luck into situations that she is a part of. Tom hates Gatsby because of the way he looks at Daisy, but keeps his cool.
On the hottest day of the year, The "friends" all go into the city since they have nothing else to do, and idea suggested by Daisy. They each take one another's car into the city. when they get to the hotel, Daisy is horrified because Tom and Gatsby begin fighting over her love. Gatsby tells Tom that Daisy never loved him, and Tom says that is impossible. Gatsby yells at daisy to tell Tom she never loved him, but In this situation, she cannot seem to bring herself to say she that she never loved Tom. This makes Gatsby furious as he loses his temper, screaming at Tom while Tom keeps his temper at an all time low. While the fight is happening, Daisy finds herself moving closer to Tom, although she was in love with Gatsby earlier in the day. Daisy yells that she wants to leave, as she is so scared and upset at the situation at hand.
Tom lets Gatsby drive with Daisy back to the house, and she hits Myrtle Wilson, the woman who Tom is cheating on Daisy with. Earlier, when they were driving one another's cars, Myrtle saw tom in Gatsby's car so she thought it was Tom driving. She dies a gruesome death after being hit. She hits Myrtle in front of George Wilson’s gas station, the home he shares with his wife Myrtle. To get Daisy out of trouble, Gatsby takes the blame for the death of Myrtle. Then, out of the blue, Daisy and Tom disappear together. After these incidents Daisy understands that Gatsby is slightly crazy, and Although may have loved him once or twice, she will always find her way back to tom.
