Online Disinhibition Effect (ODE)

(John Suler,2004) the lowering of psychological restraints, which often serve to regulate behaviors in the online social environment.

Two (2) Categories:

  • Benign Disinhibition
  • Toxic Disinhibition

TWO CATEGORIES

Benign Disinhibition

  • No harm to others
  • Individual may reveal very private things or shown unusual acts of kindness.

Toxic Disinhibition

  • Negative.
  • Individual becomes the opposite of what we consider as kind and polite.

Solipsistic Introjection

  • People assume and assign traits to individuals.
  • Imaginary interaction with introjected character.

  • Minimized "authority" presence = increased willingness to speak out or misbehave.
