Massachusetts Colony

The Massachusetts Bay colony was founded in 1630 by a group of Puritan refugees from England under Gov. John Winthrop and Deputy Gov. Thomas Dudley. The Puritans were a group of Protestant Christians with strict religious beliefs. They disagreed with some practices of England's official church, the Church of England. The English government mistreated them because of their beliefs.

The northern New England colonies had access to the bay, which they used for shipbuilding. They developed ports that served as centers of trade. In between the Charles and Merrimack rivers is where the colony was first established. This location was chosen to provide colonists with access to drinking water and an easier way of growing food in the often harsh New England climate.

Government In The Colony.

Government

The Massachusetts Bay Colony was a charter colony. This meant that the colony was allowed to govern itself, by electing local officials to carry out political administration. However, they could only do this as long as England approved of their actions, and as long as their laws were the same as England's. Only male churchgoers were allowed to vote. Many people with different religious convictions were exiled as a result of officials' intense efforts to stop any independence of religious views.
