The Sleeping Car

The Sleeping Car

Pullman had a great attraction or appeal to passenger train travel rather than shipping goods (which was normally used by railroad travel). Pullman regularly used railroad cars as transportation. He was one to know that the conditions of regular sleeping cars were dirty, unbearable and disgusting. Sleeping Cars were railroad cars that were undesirable and displeasing. They contained very cramped beds and insufficient ventilation. These sleeping cars were not given much attention from the public but were soon overtaken by a new and improved sleeping car.

More Information

George wanted to fix this uncomfortable way of travel. He decided he wanted to build a better sleeping car. After the Pullman cars made their first debut they were an immediate success. People compared them to steamboat cabins or the most deluxe or grand way to travel. The car's interior had a very intricate shape and were decorated with complex patterns. Pullman sleeping cars were never sold and always rented out to be used among the upper class.

The Sleeping Car Today

The Sleeping Car Today

Today, sleeping cars are used regularly in trains and for long distance travel. The invention of sleeping during transportation for overnight travel has grown and changed a ton. Now even airplanes have sleeping accommodations for long rides. Being able to sleep in a "bed" when traveling is still a luxury now and is used more popularly. The invention of the sleeping car is used for the same reasons it was originally created for but over the years has become even more luxurious.
