There was a range of different weapons used during the middle ages. Weapons that were used then may seem like they weren’t that powerful when you compare it to some of today’s, but really they were just as powerful. The people back then kept their weapons very simple, and they were not as advanced as we are today. Knights, archers, warriors, were all examples of the different types of people that used these powerful weapons. Weapons that were used at the time can consist of swords such as long swords, daggers, clubs and maces, pole arms and spears, and bows.
There were many different types of swords that were used during the middle ages. One of the most popular swords that was used for close up combat was the long sword. The sword was created by Europeans and used during their time. Some of the swords would range from 40 inches in length, to over 48 inches. The handle of the sword was big enough for the soldier to get both hands on it, which allowed them to have a better grip on the weapon and be stronger overall. Having two hands would also cause them to be quicker with the weapon than just using one.
Another close up combat tool was the dagger. Just like the swords, there were many different types. Their names being Anelaces, Stilettos, Poingards, and Rondels. Those four different types of daggers were all used for the same exact purpose, the only difference was the shapes of them. Some of them had a longer blade, some of them were wider, and some of them had a longer handle. Most of the time, unlike the swords, the daggers were used with only one hand. That was because of their size and how small they were. This caused the soldiers to have to go very close to their enemy, which made the daggers a risk to use.
Soldiers also used different kinds of clubs and maces, which were very similar to swords. The soldiers would use the clubs almost the same way that they would use swords, accept with the clubs they didn’t stab their enemies, they would use it like a bat and hit them with it. At the end of each of the clubs, there would be some sort of sharp spikes which are used to hurt the enemies. They could easily pierce through any of the knights armors. Even the hammers could easily pierce through the armor, even though they didn’t have the sharp spikes on them. Using these clubs and maces would put a risk on the soldier just like the swords and daggers, because of how close you would have to go to the enemy.
Most of the soldiers that ended up using the pole arms, were left with the greater advantage. That was because these poles were massive, and had a sharp point at the end from a dagger, and would pierce through any enemies it hit. All the soldier had to do was grip it firmly with two hands, stick it out, and they were safe from any nearby swords or daggers. Soldiers that were using spears on the other hand, required a little bit more skill. The spears were very similar to the poles, just a little bit smaller. The spears were used by picking them up and throwing them at the enemy. It was not guaranteed for the enemy to be hit every time, but if they are hit, it would for sure do some damage.
Bows at this time were a huge advantage for the soldier using them. It allowed the soldier to fire multiple projectiles at the attacking soldier, before they can reach them with their sword. If hit, the attacking soldier will either be killed or injured, which will make it a lot easier for the soldier with the bow to escape or just keep fighting without getting injured. The only problem with using a bow is that it may take a while to keep firing out the arrows. Once a soldier with a sword gets in range of hitting you before you can fire an arrow, then there is most likely no living after that.
