Fugitive Slave Act

The amended Fugitive Slave Act was born out of the Compromise of 1850, which was created to attempt to ease tensions and prevent conflict between the North and South. The Act required that all slaves must be returned to their owners, even if said slaves were within a free state. The South was greatly pleased by this Act: in theory, it would work to maintain their slave workforce and prevent Northern abolitionsits from helping or harboring runaway slaves. The North, specifically anti-slavery Northeners, however, were incensed. Many refused to obey the law and instead helped slaves more efficiently escape to freedom. Some Northern states even went as far as to enacting personal-liberty laws, which barred state officials from helping return fugitive slaves to their owners. While the Act was meant to appease the South and prevent further conflict from arising, the refusal of the North to obey the laws only worked to increase the animosity between them. These actions by the North further solidified the South’s belief that the North was against the development and prosperity of their region, thereby giving them no choice but to form a nation separate from them.
