Expanding Block Theory

Overview

Concept

belief already held in status quo

Time

Past and present are real, future is uncertain

Metaphor

Time is like a block constantly expanding into the 4th dimension.

Block Theory

Spacetime in Block Theory

Across space time, not just time

Time Travel

Time Travel

present - thought,

past - physical,

future - indeterminate

Past

1

Impossible

- past would become present, and if you went into the past you would need to say the future has been pre-determined

Future

2

Impossible

- Future doesn't exist, so you cannot travel to somewhere that doesn't exist yet

Free Will

Shaped by past situations, but not entirely determined by them.

Presentism

vs Block Theory

Does the past exist?

Yes.

Presentism

Explanation

In the past, the past was the present.

If the present exists, then it would be logical to reason that the present existed, and still exists.

Eternalism

vs Block Theory

Eternalism

Does the future exist?

Quantum Physics dictates that the future CANNOT be certain.

Random actions in the present will influence the future, and because these actions, to our best knowledge, are truly random, they are unpredictable. Thus, the future must also be unpredictable.

Example

On my way to the hospital, I know that the hospital probably exists, but randomness dictates that by the time I arrive at the hospital, the hospital may have burned down or may still be standing. Thus, the future cannot be certain.

Example

Poor Kitty

Schrödinger's cat

"A cat, a flask of poison, and a radioactive source are placed in a sealed box. If an internal monitor detects radioactivity, which happens truly at random, the flask is shattered, releasing the poison, which kills the cat.

After a while, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead. Yet, when one looks in the box, one sees the cat either alive or dead, not both alive and dead."

we took the heterogeneous view on TR

Temporal Reality

the heterogeneous view of TR basically means as Becky explains nicely "everything in time does not share the same ontological status"

Ontology is a category of metaphysics that studies the concepts of existence, being, becoming, and reality.
