Adapted Frayer Model
By, Sarah Bernstein
The Frayer model is a graphic organizer for building student vocabulary. This technique requires students to define target vocabulary and apply their knowledge by generating examples and non-examples, giving characteristics, and drawing a picture to illustrate the meaning of the word. This information is placed on a chart that is divided into four sections to provide a visual representation for students.

The Frayer model is an example of big ideas. These are the ideas, values, or rules that help students to access and acquire knowledge (i.e., the essence of what all students need to learn from the lesson or unit).

Teachers should demonstrate how to complete the graphic organizer by talking through what they are doing and how they are coming up with the information they enter into the different sections. Teachers should teach students how to use textbooks and other subject-matter materials to generate and discuss the information for each section.
By filling out the frayer model with their classes, teachers help students to apply practices, including contextualizing terms, actively processing information, and experiencing multiple exposures to terms. Once students have sufficient experience with the Frayer model, they should be able to complete sections in class without teacher guidance (i.e., independently, in pairs, or in small groups.
How to start?
To begin the Frayer model, label each of the 4 sections as the following:

Draw a picture
Describe the word/characteristics
Urbanization

The last space on the Frayer model is for the sentence with the word 'urbanization' in it: Rapid urbanization happened after several large groups of immigrants moved into the city.

It is essential that students have a full understanding of the frayer model before beginning to fill it out. Also, students need to have a familiarity with the content being addressed (i.e., urbanization) and sufficient backgound knowledge.
The Frayer model can be used for cumulative review!
