Digital skills and Digital literacies are crucial for staff engagement, communication and collaboration.

Introduction

This presentation will outline the different social media platforms available today, their uses as well as their advantages and disadvantages regarding communication between staff members and finally, discuss the factors to consider before implementing a social media platform in the workplace environment.

Statistics from an article published on the DreamGrow website show Facebook, YouTube and Instagram topping the list of the "15 most popular social networking sites or platforms worldwide" while other apps such as Ozone, Weibo and Twitter making up the top 6 of this list.

Uses for these apps

These different social media applications can be used to:

  • connect with family, friends and work colleagues or other unknown individuals
  • share photos, videos, music as well as thoughts and ideas

These applications are very visual and attracting, especially towards towards today's generation therefore implementing a social media platform into an organization for communicating can serve beneficial.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Social media can be extremely useful and efficient for communicating with colleagues however the advantages & disadvantages that arise are inevitable.

Social media is a huge part of today's modern life therefore, it is important to recognize that its usage in the workplace can be rewarding.

Several advantages include:

  • Any employee in a company is most likely using at least one different social media app so, using a social media platform to communicate can be easily managed to converse and share information as well as new ideas.
  • A Harvard review also shows that "82% of employee's believes social media improves work relationships" (Boyd.C, 2020)

  • MacKinsey Global institute conducted a research revealing that work productivity increases by 20% to 25% .
  • Plus, employees who are socially involved are more likely to communicate better with colleagues and customers increasing participation and collaboration in the workplace (HR Management, 2014).

Employee Recognition & Retention

Improves employee recognition & retention

  • The use of social media in a work setting promotes recognition amongst staff while boosting employee retention as well.
  • A study also showed that "employees that used 1 to 4 social networking sites on a weekly basis stayed longer at their jobs compared to their peers (HR Management)

Disadvantages

Several disadvantages in using social media in the workplace to communicate internally with staff include:

Social media can affect the focus and concentration of staff at work meaning employees take longer to complete certain tasks affecting their overall productivity performance.

Employers may need to tighten their rules around the usage of social media at work which in return forces employees to only use social media in certain ways at specific times and that can be demeaning for staff members.

Factors to consider for implementation

Dough Beshaw stated that " Digital literacies are not solely about technical proficiency but about the issues, norms and habits of mind surrounding technologies used for a particular purpose" (Bahli. M, 2016)

While it is important to focus on the digital literacy part of communicating online, it is also vital to understand the digital literacy part of it.

Digital literacy centers around understanding the why, when and for whom while digital skills simply focus on what and how the app will be used.

Conclusion

Using social media as a form of communication in the workplace can be distracting towards an employees work ethic however, the positives of using such digital technology clearly outweigh the negatives.

Nevertheless, it is vital to consider the digital literacies of certain apps before deciding to use them.

Understanding the ethics for each media platform will definitely help in limiting any negative issues that may arise from using social media to communicate internally with staff.
