"Through the Tunnel" Plot Chart

Through the Tunnel by Doris Lessing

Exposistion

Exposistion

A boy named Jerry and his mother are on vacation in a foreign country and are exploring their surroundings. The story is being told through third-person omniscient.

Rising action

Jerry sees a group of boys, whom are native to the country in which Jerry is vacationing in, and is desprete to join them. He wants to be like them and is trying to learn to hold his breath underwater for a long period of time so he too can get through the tunnel with the other boys.

Conflict

Internal conflict: Jerry is trying to prove to himself that he can go through the tunnel.

External conflict: Jerry couldn't fit through the tunnel, causing him to get stuck.

Climax

Jerry becomes trapped during his last attempt to go through the tunnel. He begins to run out of air.

Falling action

Jerry makes it back to the shore, gasping for air. Blood from his nose bleeding had filled his goggles. He returns to the villa to be with his mother.

Resolution

Jerry wants nothing but to go home and lie down. He tells his mother he is able to hold his breath for 2-3 minutes. He is no longer interested in going back to the bay.
