SOLDER

Solder is a fusible metal alloy used to join together metal workpieces.

SOLDER

+

A solder joint is use to attach a wire to the pin of a component on the rear of a printed circuit board.

SOLDERING IRON

It supplies heat to melt the solder so that it can flow into the joint between two workpieces.

SOLDERING IRON

+

A soldering iron is composed of a heated metal tip and an insulated handle. Heating is often achieved electrically.

Before use, the tip must be tinted with a thin layer of solder.

PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD

A printed circuit board is a plastic board that holds electronic circuits together and connects electronic components through conductive tracks etched into the board.

PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD

+

Can be single-sided (one copper layer), double-sided (two copper layers) or multilayer.

Conductors on different layers are connected with plated through holes called vias.

RESISTORS

A device that slows down the passage of electric current.

RESISTORS

CAPACITORS

A passive two-terminal electrical component used to store energy on a circuit board.

CAPACITORS

+

Capacitors have two ends, one positive and one negative.

(Always make sure to put the ends into the correct holes on the circuit board otherwise the circuit will short circuit).

Long end is positive, short end is negative.

TRANSISTORS

Semiconductor device used to amplify and switch electronic signals and electrical power.

TRANSISTORS

+

The essential usefulness of a transistor comes from its ability to use a small signal applied between one pair of its terminals to control a much larger signal at another pair of terminals.

LEDs

A semiconductor light source.

LEDs

+

Low energy consumption, small size, and longer lifespan.

The longer leg is always positive.

MOTORS

A device that creates motion, usually an engine of some kind.

MOTORS

LIGHT SENSORS

Has a resistance that varies with ambient light intensity.

LIGHT SENSORS

+

Its resistance decreases from millions of ohms in darkness to a few hundred ohms in bright light.

MICROCHIP AKA INTEGRATED CIRCUIT

A group of tiny electronic circuits that work together on a very small piece of hard material (such as silicon).

MICROCHIP

+

Polarity matters! + to + and - to -.

Microchips contain numerous transistors.

Ground yourself by touching the faucet to discharge static electricity before touching your microchip or else your board may get ruined.

Ask questions if you're unsure.
