Define: Sexual Orientation

The 3 dimensions of sexual orientation

"a person's sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are attracted; the fact of being heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual." -Oxford Dictionary

What is Sexual Orientation?

Sexual identity VS Sexual orientation

Your sexual identity refers to whether you feel you are male or female. Whereas your sexual orientation refers to who you are attracted to sexually, men or women.

Breaking the Binary

Diversity in Human Sexuality and Sexual orientation

LGBTQ+

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer

The "+" encompasses those who aren't straight but are not covered in the five letters.

For example - Asexual, Pansexual or questioning.

Homophobia: The fear and hatred of or discomfort with people who are attracted to members of the same sex.

- HRC.org

Homophobia can take many different forms; it's often based in irrational fear and misunderstanding.

Some people's homophobia may be rooted in conservative religious beliefs or perhaps these beliefs were taught by their communities or families.

HRC.org

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." - Nelson Mandela

OBSTACLES AND CHALLENGES

The process of coming out is broken down into four phases:

1. recognizing oneself as lesbian or gay

2. exploring one's sexual orientation through the gay and 3. lesbian community

4. disclosing one's sexual orientation to others

becoming more comfortable with one's sexual orientation

Hate crime and violence including bullying and harassment, against the LGBTQ+ community continues to be high

Its History and

Obstacles Faced

50's and 60's

"Throughout the 1950s and 60s, gay men and lesbians continued to be at risk for psychiatric lockup as well as jail, losing jobs, and/or child custody when courts and clinics defined gay love as sick, criminal or immoral"

70's :

First Lesbian and Gay Rights March in Washington

80's :

-State of Wisconsin passed the first lesbian and gay civil rights movement bill in the United States

-AIDS Outbreak

-October 11, 1988 : First National Coming Out Day

90's :

-State of Minnesota enacts first statewide law banning discrimination against transgender people

2000'S

-State of Vermont becomes the first to recognize civil unions between gay or lesbian couples/ Massachusetts legalizes same sex marriage

-Supreme Court rules that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry

LGBTQ+ people are less likely than non-LGBTQ+ people to have health insurance coverage. A recent survey found that 56% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual respondents and 70% of transgender or gender-nonconforming respondents had been discriminated against in a healthcare setting

America’s estimated 5.4 million LGBTQ+ workers face inequality, unfairness, harassment, and discrimination in the workplace

In Groups: Creativity from the bottom up

Impact

Diversity is known to increase innovation and generate new ideas

-Inherent Diversity

-Acquired Diversity

Don't Suppress Ideas

To be competitive in the modern age of business, companies need to take advantage of all their assets, including Human Capital.

Insensitivity in the Workplace

  • It can be challenging for LGBT workers to be successful in the workplace

In the Workplace

  • Several common difficulties sexually diverse people face in the professional world are feeling like their ideas and input are not welcome, experiencing inappropriate behavior from coworkers, and being left out of social networks

Contrary Expectations

  • It is understood that in any professional setting, some level of sharing is required to build rapport among workers, among other things.

  • Despite 80% of non-LGBT employees agreeing that you shouldn't have to hide who you are at work, there are many who send messages contrary to this belief.

  • For example, 46% of non-LGBT workers said they wouldn't be very comfortable working with an LGBT coworker because "they didn't want to hear about their coworker's sex life."

Inappropriate Behavior

  • Many sexually diverse workers experience inappropriate behavior from their coworkers for various reasons.

  • 18% of LGBT workers said that sexually improper comments were made to them because their coworkers thought their sexual orientation deemed it acceptable.

Inappropriate behavior

Social Isolation

  • Because a workplace can be hesitant of accepting sexually diverse workers, it makes it difficult to face certain coworkers and attend social events either in or outside of work.

  • For instance, 20-25% of LGBT workers avoid engaging in lunches and holiday parties with coworkers due to potential micro aggressions they may experience.

  • 10% of LGBT workers have even left a certain job because of the hostile climate directed towards them.

Resolution

Question: As a future (or current) manager how will you handle diversity challenges?

34% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the UK choose not to disclose their sexuality at the work place for risk of homophobia

So what can today's managers do?

Resolve

There are many ways that mangers and business's can help with the diversity of LGBT/ plus ..Here are a few examples mangers today have already implemented

According to John Browne, who is one of the few openly gay business figures and author of "The Glass Closet" he believes that

" A company that can pledge its support to employees regardless of their skin color of their skin, gender or sexuality stands to benefit greatly."

- Gender neutral toilets/ bathrooms

- Some companies have participated in Pride March in San Francisco to show support for the LGBT community

- Mostly importantly for business leaders and executives it's important to be educated on the subject of LBGT awareness

What's the fear?

LGBT/Plus individuals who work in today's modern society are very well aware that they live in heterosexual society.

Because of this most members of the LGBT/ Plus community prefer to keep their personal life to themselves.

What Are We Trying Today?

Current Situation

  • Microagression and Harrassment Awareness
  • Video Series
  • Television/Media
  • Legalizing Same Sex Marriage (2015)
  • Accountability
  • Laws and Policies
