PATHOLOGY

Host

Infected

HOST INFECTED

  • Commonly found in soils
  • Hosts are cereal grains, legumes, and tree nuts
  • Causes rot in corn and mold in peanuts
  • Contaminates with mycotoxins
  • May also be found in households (carpets)

Modes of Transmission

  • Ingestion of an infected grain
  • Through consumption of dairy and meat that have been contaminated through animal feed
  • Can be found in households such as basements, carpets, and storage areas

DIAGNOSIS

AND

TREATMENT

DIAGNOSIS + TESTS

Invasive Aspergillosis is an infection caused by Aspergillus

Immunocompromised population is at a high risk

The most common organ affected is the lungs, along with the paranasal sinuses and the central nervous system

Ways to test and diagnose Aspergillosis-

Bronchoscopy with biopsy, x-rays, antigen skin tests, tissue culture or blood tests

Diagnosis and testing

TREATMENT + PRECAUTIONS

Treatment

Symptoms-

Chest pain, cough, blood in sputum, pneumonia, headache, vision disturbance, blood in urine

Early treatment-

Observation (repeat x-rays), corticosteroids (helps lung function), and anti-fungal medications such as "Vfend" (standard treatment)

Advanced treatment-

If the above does not improve condition, surgery and embolization may be necessary to salvage lung function and prevent fungal mass growth and stop bleeding from worsening
