During this era music played was sacred, meaning it was based of the catholic church and was strictly biblical. The church was very prominnent during this time period and was on top of the social hierarchy, so everything was based on catholic beleifs. Also most of the music was monophonic, with just one melody no support or harmony. In this era you wont hear much instruments just human voices, beacuse instruments weren't used in the church.
Fun Daily Fact- most of the music in this era was sung in latin due to it being the primary language and used in the bible.
Instrumentation- voices, specifically women voices.
There is also a drone (a steady sound) throughout the peice.
If you listen closley theres a call and respose, where one women sings and the choir responds.
The peice is slow but consists of leaps, where the energy increases.
FUN FACT- "Ave Generosa", was wrote for women and Bingen was one of the first to compose for women.

The renaissance was the era when the catholic church split and Martin Luther found the protestant church. An era where the influence of the church was still powerful but not as powerful as it was during the middle ages. It was of period of growth, change and exploration. The discovery of music painting was also found during this era. It was also known as the age of Capella and vocals were perfected during this time. During this time period the language used in most songs were based off the audience not just Latin.
Daily fun fact- The lute(early guitar) was created and was the most popular instrument during this period.
Instumentation- voices(mixed choir)

The peice is polyphonic, you can hear several voices in this peice.
The peice is still sacred because there is no instumentation and still biblical, but vernacular because the audience spoke english.

During this era people didnt really like the new music so they named it the Baroque era meaning bizzare or unusal. Also, known as the period of grandeur and expanding horizons. During this era music was much more emotional and expressive. Tonailty was developed and the mixing of genres. During this period the last fight between the catholic and protestant church occurred.
Examples of insturments used during this period- lute, violin, viola, cello,trumpet, horn, recorder, flute, oboe and bassoon.
