Introduction

Causes

Hungary is country located in central Europe with a rich history. The Hungarian Revolution started off during a political crises and uprising began in 1956. The war was faught between the Soviets and two rival Hungarian parties. The revolution was faught in the capital city of Hungary over a short 12 days period of time.

Key Causes

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted

Personal Connection

The main cause of the Hungarian Revolution was the unjust control by the Soviet Union over the Hungarian people. The people started revolting because of:

  • Lack of political freedom (no freedom of speach or rights to vote)
  • Unjust communist party
  • Poor harvest
  • Shortage of food & hunger
  • Theft
  • Land being taken away from/stolen from the lower class
  • Impatience (Newton Academy & Kapdebo Szilard 2022)

The uprising offically began after a group of students who went to complain about the situation got shot. (Kapdebo Szilard 2022)

Key Consequences

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted

  • Over 5,000 Hungarians were killed during the war, in just 12 days
  • 200,000 Hungarians fled just the capital
  • Over 1,000 Soviet troops were killed (BBC)

  • Quality of life was improving, better salaries, education, religious freedom, and bigger range of goods, however, the dictatorship did not change
  • No traveling abroad (unless having papers from the police)
  • After the war, up to 400 people that took part were killed
  • Fleeing led to success for many (Kapdebo Szilard 2022))

Personal Connection

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted

With the Hungarian Revolution being one of the most significant historic events in the last centuary of Hungarian history, it was only right to do my project about this uprising. I have a personal connection to this specific revolution because most of my family is from Hungary and the war happened in the city where I was born, grew up, and lived for 11 years. It was a great opportunity to learn a bit about how Budapest was shaped over the last century. This revolution also holds a special place in my heart because my grandparents lived during the times of the revolution and the war heros that took part in the war are still remebered every year on the 23rd of October. On this day every year, many Hungarians go out in the streets of Budapest with flags celebrating the people that bravely faught.

Alternative Perspective

Consequences

Having control over one-sixth of the Earth's surface and covering land equivalent to the size of North America, made for without a doubt, one of the most powerful countries/empires in history. Considering the perspecitve of the Soviet Union, a small revolting country like Hungary fighting for their rights should not have caused any major consequences. The Soviets wanted to assert dominance once again but during the time of the war over 1000 troops died and the Hungarians were able to expose their weaknesses. After the death of Kadar Janos, no one was able to exert such dominence again and the dictatorship ended in 1989.

Summary

Alternative Perspective

The Hungarian Revolution was undoubtably one of the most signifcant events in Hungarian History. Even though the uprising resulted in a blood bath and thousands were killed, it ultimately contributed to better quality in Hungary and it also helped the fight againsts the Soviets throughout much of Eurasia. The uprising was revolutionary as it led to Hungary as we know it today, but it was also revolutionary because it was the first major emergency for the United Nations. Because of this, it is not only a day to remember in Hungary but many people world-wide have learn to appriciate the brave Hungarians who sacrificed their lives to help their future genrations.
