Motivations

  • Racial segregation was nearly universal during King's time
  • Mahatma Gandhi inspired King to practice nonviolence
  • Religion played a part as well, as his father and grandfather were both preachers
  • Like Antigone, King was motivated by unfair laws and wanted to do what was right, even if it was against the law.

Effect

Martin Luther King, Jr. was not worried about the consequences of his actions in breaking the law; he wanted equality and justice for all people. Antigone was also more concerned with doing the right thing than breaking the law because the law was unfair and went against doing the right thing. She knew that Polynices and Eteocles were equals, just as King knew that blacks and whites were equals and deserved equal treatment and protection under the law.

Effect on Society

Antigone Background

Antigone Back ground:

In Greek mythology, Antigone was the daughter of Oedipus and his mother, Jocasta. Oedipus, king of Thebes, unknowingly married his mother Jocasta, and had four children: Antigone, Ismene, Polynices and Eteocles. After Eteocles and Polynices killed each other fighting for the throne, Creon declared that Eteocles should receive all the proper burial rites, but Polynices should not be buried or even mourned.

Background

Background

Antigone felt that this law was unjust and set out to bury Polynices. She believed that Polynices deserved to be buried with the same respect that Eteocles was.

Antigone motivations

Motivations:

The reason why Antigone went against Creon's wishes is because she loved her brother and she thinks everyone deserves an equal burial. She believes no matter if a person is good or evil, they still should be buried.

HOW ARE THEY ALIKE?

Similarities:

Antigone and Martin Luther King Jr. are both rebellious heroes. They both have to go against authority to get the rights and the things that they want. Antigone wanted a burial for her brother, but Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to end segregation and gain equality for all people. Both of these rebellious heroes wanted to do things for other people and not just for themselves. They both went against laws that they knew were unjust. They were both selfless and brave.
