The purpose of the myth,Procne and Philomela was to explain karma and revenge. In the myth, karma was shown by Tereus' actions catching up to him when he lied and cut off Philomela's tongue and then paid the price of feasting on his own son.The myth also explained revenge when Procne avenged Philomela by killing her own son and feeding him to her husband.
The myth began with Procne trying to convince her husband,Tereus, to travel to Athens and escort her sister,Philomela, to Procne's palace in Thrace.Tereus agreed, but once he got to Athens and laid eyes on Philomela, he instantly fell in love with her. As Tereus and Philomela started overland for the palace, Tereus lied to Philomela and told her that he had recieved news of Procne's death and he forced Philomela into a fake marriage. Within a very short time,Philomela found out the truth and threaten to tell, but before she could Tereus cut out her tongue and seized her.
Then,Tereus left Philomela in a strongly guarded room in Procne's palace.Immediately after Tereus went to Procne and told her that Philomela had passed away on the journey.Meanwhile Philomela was in her guarded room thinking of how she could let Procne know what had happened to her since she could not speak. Philomela soon found a loom and made a tapestry describing what had happened to her.She gave it to the woman who attended her and signified that it was for the Queen.
The woman delivered the tapestry that Philomela made to Procne. As Procne read the tapestry, her face grew with horror as she realized what she had read. After reading the tapestry,Procne ran to where Tereus had Philomela staying in their palace and told Philomela that she would avenge her. Pronce's son came prancing in the room moment later and once Pronce saw him,she was filled with rage and killed her son beacuse she was reminined of her husband when she saw him.
Tereus being turned into a hawk symbolises how ugly his actions were and who he was as a person because it was said that the hawk was an ugly bird with a huge beak.
After killing her own son,Procne decided to feed her son to Tereus for supper.During their supper, while Tereus was eating his food,Procne decided to tell him exactly what he was eating.Tereus went into a complete shock after hearing what he had ate,but he soon became very angry and chased after the two sisters trying to kill them. As soon as Tereus caught up to the sisters, moments away from killing them, the gods turned all of them into birds. Procne turned into a nightingale,Philomela to a mute swallow who could only twitter, but never sing, and Tereus into a hawk.
Philomela was turned into a swallow which symbolises her beauty beacuse a shallow has many bright and beautiful colors as its feather, but cannot sing representing Philomela when she was mute.
