Representational versus Presentational

by Paige Montebello

characters

characters are made up of the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.

characters

representational

presentational

versus

representational

representational characters are in there own little world with no interaction with the audience (aka the forth wall) this is created to make it seem more realistic.

representational

hint: this can also be called realism

representational characteristics

characteristics

-movements should be subtle

- emotions should be shown when they naturally come through

Example: johnny Dowd (summer of the seventeenth doll)

Presentational

presentational

'Presentational acting', in this sense, refers to a relationship that acknowledges the audience, whether directly by addressing them, or indirectly through a general attitude or specific use of language, looks, gestures or other signs that indicate that the character or actor is aware of the audience's presence.

presentational

characters

characters in presentational theater often have over the top emotions and gestures. this is not someone you would walk past without questioning there movement. these characters should be larger than life.

example: Elle woods (legally blond)

differences

one of the major differences with presentational and representational is the relationship with the audience. Representational their is no interaction it is if you are watching there lives from a far were as presentational you are involved like you are one of the characters

characters

the difference in characters is that representational characters have more realistic features were as presentational characters have my emphasised feature and body language.

costuming and staging

costuming- atire that and actor or actress is set to wear to help the audience learn more about the charatcer.

staging- the environment that the play is set in, is recreated on stage to mimic the situation and create mood and depth.

staging and costuming

representational

costuming- shoud be much like your everday cloths and suited for the era the play is set in and nothing too over the top (nothing that looks like a 'costume').

staging- staging should be very realistic, there shouldnt be many set changes as there shouldnt be any time jumps. it should look like they actual live there or that it is somewhere you would go in everyday life.

presentational

costuming- costuming should be larger than life and over ecsentuated makeup is normally over the top.

staging- staging looks more strategically placed there will often be more than on set staging as in presentational they often have time jumps.

practitioners

practioner- a person activly engaged in their proffession (usually in the arts or medicine).

practitioners

representational

Konstantin Stanislavski (17/1/1863-7/71938) stanislavski founded the moscow arts theatre and also created the stanislavski technique which which is creating a chracter with so much depth that the actor/actress knows there lines and the motivation behind the line but also the characters off stage life as well. he uses "the magical if" so the actor/actress thin more deeply about their charcter and ask themselves questions that start with what if.

presentational

all though the terms presentational and representational wearnt around back then william shakspreare created presentational plays (26/4/1564- 23/4/1616). William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatis.

audience response

the audience response really depends on the mood, interaction and performance of a play.

audience response

representational

representational drama the actors and actress do not interact with the audience so the audience feels as they are watching from a far this method doesn't necessarily emotionally connect with the audience but you obviously get drawn to one character and feel more attached to them then the others but representational theatre in my opinion aren't as moving as presentational theatre

presentational

In presentational theatre actors talk to the audience as another character or express there internal diaolgue to the audience this for me creates a deeper connection with the character which then makes leaves you with questions in your head about the actions in which were displayed in the play.

examples

presentational

- the stones

- musicals

- the Laramie project

- our town

representational

-reenactments
