Adam Smith

The Father of Economics

Adam Smith begins

Begins

  • He was born in the 5th of June 1723 in Scotland

  • His father died 3 moths before he was born

  • He had a great relationship with his mother, who encouraged him in his studies

  • He started to learn Latin, mathematics, history, and writing

Personality and beliefs

Personal life

  • About Smith's personal views only can be inferred from his published articles

  • His personal papers were destroyed at his request after his death

  • He never got married

  • He was known as a good-natured but somewhat foolish person who sometimes walked or spoke strangely and often talked to himself

Religious views

Religious views

  • The question, "Was Adam Smith religious?" is debatable even today

  • According to most of the sources he was irreligious

  • He trusted science and evidence rather than blind faith

Famous works

Works

The Theory of Moral Sentiments

  • Published in 1759

Smith believes:

  • The basis of human morality and social coexistence is sympathy and solidarity.
  • This is the driving force behind the work.

The Wealth of Nations

The Wealth of Nations

  • One of the most important economical work!!!

  • Basically founded classical economics

  • The metaphor of the "invisible hand" (really important!) It creates the "natural price" as a result of the forces acting on supply and demand...

  • Even today it is an important work to study economics

The interesting contradictions between his two major book

The contradictions

  • In The Theory of Moral Sentiments community solidarity as the basis and driving force of social activities

Meanwhile...

  • In The Wealth of Nations he placed self-interest in a similar role

His views did not change either between the writing of the two works, as he later revised the (previously written) The Theory of Moral Sentiments but did not radically change it

Heritage

Heritage

Adam Smith was undoubtedly one of the world's greatest thinkers exclusively in economics. His appearance evokes the face of an amused person, and it can be seen on his face that he was able to smile a lot. His deep-set eyes and firm chin gave him dignity despite his nature. He had no wife or children. He only had a really close relationship with his mother, whom he cared for until her death.

Yet he discovered economic relationships that operate the entire Western world to this day. I respect him because he showed that in the world of science, it is not how "normal" you are according to common language that matters, but that you are able to see the connections of the world .
