Edward Theodore Gein

(butcher of Plainfiled)

By : Alyssa Ricker

Childhood

Ed Gein was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin in August of 1906. He was the youngest child . His parents, Augusta & George Gein, had another boy before him to whom they named Henry George Gein. His mother was very religous and would preach to the boys every afternoon verses from the old testament, book of revelation, and bible, that were mostly about death, murder, and retribution. Augusta hated her husband , who was an alcoholic and unable to keep a steady job. She believed that all woman , besides herself , were promiscuous, conniving, and instruments of the devil. Ed's father owned a local grocery shop , to which he eventually sold and moved with his family to live on a 155- acre farm in Plainfield, Wisconsin.

Childhood

Education

Ed and his brother started school at Roche-a-Cri grade school. Ed was average at school, but an excellent reader. Ed was shunned and isolated at school because of his lazy eye and his shyness. He also had a lesion on his tongue that caused him to speak a bit weird. Augusta severely punished Ed when he did attempt to make friends. Augusta verbally abused both boys, believing they were destined to become failures like their father. Ed would come home crying from kids making fun of him and his alcoholic father would repeatedly beat him in the head till his ears started ringing. eventually when ed grew up he moved on to junior high and dropped out after the 8th grade.

Criminal activity

Gein would often grave-rob local cemeteries and create clothing and household items from the skin and bones of his victims. And even after doing so , he felt like he needed the skin of a freshily killed woman, so he went out of his way to murder two woman, Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan. He is also believed to be inspired by his overbearing, domineering mother, who he had a disturbing obsession with. Gein's crimes would eventually inspire numerous horror films, including Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Gein eventually went to trial November 21st of 1957 where gein was found not guilty due to reason of insanity and was sent to a mental hospital for the criminally insane.

Characterizing a serial killer

If I were to characterize Ed Gein, i would say he is a psychopathic serial killer who's tactic to killing was more of a mission-oriented reasoningto his killings and other crimes. His goal was to make a woman suit to become his mother .This was his way of grieveing after his mother passsed away ,and it just shows how disgustingly obsessed he was with his mother. He also was very unorganized, nor was he mentally stable considering the fact that everything in his house was made out of human skin.
