Fast Facts About Down Syndrome

I. Cause

• Down syndrome is a genetic condition that results in the 21st pair of chromosome to have an extra copy resulting in a trisomy. Trisomy 21 is the most common kind of Down Syndrome.

• A typical person has 46 chromosomes, a person with DS has 47.

• There is no known cause of Trisomy21. It is a random and spontaneous occurrence which begins at conception.

• It is not hereditary and there are no preventive measures for this condition.

II. Diagnosis/Tests/Markers

• A syndrome is defined as a a group of symptoms that consistently occur together or a condition characterized by a set of associated symptoms.

• Kids with Down Syndrome have common physical characteristics such as almond eyes, sandal toes, low tone (hypotonia), a single palmar crease.

• A confirmation of Down Syndrome is done via Karyotyping.

II. Early Intervention

• A program that will be set by your lead doctor to ensure that your child gets the necessary tests and therapies to help your child and your family.
