Introduction

TD is a reductionist theory that aims to provide a causative link between technology and society's nature

Introduction

WHAT ?

WHAT IS TD ?

According to Ferrante, Technological Determinism is a theory that presumes that a society's technological innovation drives the development of it's cultural values

HISTORY

History of Technological Determinism

- Name by THORSTEIN VEBLEN .

- Belief that technology is the agent of social change .

- Consider technology as an independent factor .

IMPACT

Impact of TD in Society

The creation of social media has allowed us to communicate anytime, anywhere, but in the process we lost the most vital form of interaction, which is the face - to - face communication.

This innovation of technology had actually made the societies around the world to begun abandon the value of social interaction.

Impact

Karl Marx

Karl Marx

The theory of TD has deeply fascinated the German socialist.

Included inside his 'Marxian Economics', Marx's belief is that technological advancements can in fact lead the charge to change in current society of the time with means of production and how it could affect these aspects with overwhelming power;

- Cultural

- Economic

- Political

As society develops a superstructure, made of politics and culture, for the means of production, the productivity force will further increase over time. It is highly dependent on it's social structure.

Superstructure must be forced to adapt to newer methods to move advanced technological advancements.

Hard & Soft Theory

Hard & Soft theory

- Many authors, such as Daniel Chandler, Martin Oliver and a few more, had written research articles about technological determinism and had explained that there are two different kinds of determinism found in this theory, which are ' Hard Determinism' and 'Soft Determinism' .

Hard Determinism

Is seen as where technology is viewed as nothing but a powerful force of nature and has the ability to control all social activities. As a result, society will have to amend itself to meet the requirements of technology and will forever be out of their reach.

Soft Determinism

- on the other hand, is a much more passive view. Here, technology is viewed as a helping hand in society and show them all the possible outcomes, but the end result is entirely based on their decisions.

Social

Constructivism

The Polar Opposite

Just like how TD theorizes the influences of society with technology, Social Constructivism theorizes on how society influences technology. While technological factors can determine the success or failure of a piece of technology in TD, in SC, it is the contributions if social factors to determine the success/failure of technology. For example, it is entirely up to society whether or not the first iPhone will be good or bad.

Progress of TD & How

it Will Change the Culture

Portrayal in Movies

Ghost In the Shell ( 2017 )

- TD will soon erase human limitations.

-Humans will be able to change their fleshy body to robotic vessels, freeing themselves from fleshy limitations.

-Technology will emerge as mankind's new savior.

Terminator 3

Terminator 3 ( 2003 )

-However, TD can also be misused.

-If technology possesses the ability to think on it's own, we won't be able to control them.

-They will act upon their will and it will not bring peace. We will be responsible for our wrongdoing.

-Our creation and choices will bring our own demise.
